Looks like Real Madrid might sign him, along with Gago, but it was obvious they was going to sign Gago any way, and Marcello at that.
It's a shame really, surely you don't want to go to Madrid when your 18 and 20 years old!

The Spanish press is convinced that Chelsea (and Milan) have lost out on the signatures of two Argentine starlets: Fernando Gago and Gonzalo Higuaín: it`s Real Madrid who have secured both.

Apparently Milan sent their Director General Ariedo Braida to Buenos Aires last week to try to tie up both Gago and Higuaín. Braida returned to Italy empty handed, as River Plate told him that both players only want to go to Madrid. Chelsea contacted Gago`s agent, Marcelo Lombilla, and tabled an offer. Apparently the offer was refused. As for Higuaín, there were rumours that Chelsea had tabled an £8 million bid last week. Of course, River Plate flatly denied this.

Despite the crowing in Madrid, one wonders whether they really will manage to secure these two players given the complex financial montages involved. River operated at a loss last season, and therefore they sold 50% of Higuaín`s rights (worth €6 million) to a number of Russian companies. It is said that one of these is owned by Roman Abramovich. The companies involved are putting on a certain pressure for Higuaín to sign for Chelsea.

The thing is, Higuaín has now gone on record saying that he only wants to sign for Madrid, and he`s apparently given the Spanish club (with a cavalier attitude towards FIFA rules) his word.

Indeed, 'Marca` has an interview with the player in which he says the magic words. "I`m pleased that Madrid has noticed me and I`m also happy to stay a little longer at River to play the Copa Libertadores and the cup. I`m happy for all this. It would be nice to be another galactico. Real Madrid have a great team and it would be nice to play there".

He didn`t say the stock phrase that Madrid targets are expected to utter: "it would be a dream come true to play for Real Madrid", but in their dirty way, Madrid suits can use this declaration now to negotiate down the transfer fee since they will argue that their player will only go to Madrid.

If that transfer happens, Higuaín will apparently cost Madrid €9 million, of which €7,5 million will go to the Russian companies. River Plate will receive a paltry €1,5 million.

Madrid are said to be finalising one winter signing, a Brazilian fullback called Marcelo. The club will be sending Franco Baldini, one of their suits, to Buenos Aires later this week, to tie up these two recruitments.

One has to ask whether Chelsea were ever really that interested. To be frank, we don`t have a tradition of Latin American players, certainly not in the same way that Madrid does. And our last 2 Argentines (Juan Sebastian Veron and Hernán Crespo) didn`t really feel the Blue Shirt in the same way that we expect them too. Oh well.

EDIT: Sorry Sir Robben, I hadn't seen.

What I ment Kezza is, basically Real Madrid is the biggest club in the world in terms of what they have won, yes they have won bugger all in three seasons, but I see Madrid as a club to go to when your say 26, 27, then stay there for three or four seasons, because if this 18 year old goes there, is he really going to stay there until the end of his playing days ?
I would of thought IMO, go to Chelsea for a good few years, then may be Madrid, Chelsea are amazing at the moment, but in terms of what we have won down the years is nothing much compared to Madrid, Milan etc It's just what I think any way, I think for him to go to Madrid at that age is a bit stupid.

River Plate have turned down a 10 million euro offer from Real Madrid for 18-year-old striker Gonzalo Higuain. See here.
