pretty sure on an effectiveness rating Lampard and mata would be close to equal. if chelsea is trying to impose a basic wage cap and I think they are with the current purchases bar torres all on 70k or below I'm thinking they will only blow it if they think the player is worth it or roman wants him badly. in terms of hulk, yes he struggles against better teams, yes he is 1 dimensional and yes he doesnt really do much work outside of his attacking area but guess what he is the type of player that will finish off weaker teams, going up against a qpr or norwich? hulk will win those games for you, because you can't let the guy free to drift and putting 1 fullback isn't enough, he is too quick and too strong. so that drags 2 players away to reduce space in the middle for balls to slip through, if they use a midfielder to pick him up then suddenly Lampard is free in the centre.
those kinds of knock on effects are impossible to ignore for smaller teams because the fullbacks that can keep up with hulk in speed can't match him on strength, if you have somewhere stronger they can't keep up with him running at them. against better teams those teams can afford to pick up hulk because they have quality of near equal ability to chelsea's across the pitch, those lower level teams dont.
in the end of it, if chelsea had won more of its "easy" games they wouldnt be 6th. hulk wouldnt guarantee first but he bullies teams enough to make up that massive 25 gap we had this season, he is worth at least 15 of those points alone.
Interesting point, this is something that has been criticised of Ronaldo in the past, but now I think he is beginning to show he's better than that.
Back to Hulk though, I think he'd be great for us. Could make the difference with his strength, pace and unpredictable shooting/dribbling.
