Apparently Frank Arnesan has claimed he is a target in the Summer. A few sites are reporting the news...do we need another right back though?

Frank Arnesen, Chelsea Sporting Director, has confirmed that Dutch right-back Gregory van der Wiel is a Blues target, according to Ajax Life.

The Dane said:

“There’s currently not much to say about it.

“Our priority is now a central defender with Alex injured.

“Gregory is on our number one list but not currently at the top. If we’re serious, nothing will happen until the summer.”

Like many, I did not know a whole lot about van der Wiel until the young marauding fullback announced himself on the world stage at the FIFA World Cup in South Africa. The 22-year-old started two games in the tournament and has since been linked with clubs all other Europe and is billed as one of the continent’s brightest young prospects.

With Chelsea suffering some defensive frailties and Jose Bosingwa’s contract up in the summer, would it be worth selling our Portuguese right-back this January, rather than risk losing him for nothing at the end of the season?

Of course, the only problem with this is that we would lose a Champions League eligible player and be replacing him with a cup-tied one.

If Bosingwa is allowed to leave in the summer, Ferreira is no longer deemed good enough and Ivanovic gets his wish to remain a centreback, by my count we need two. Srna and van der Wiel.

So we're letting Bosingwa go after paying 16 million for him and missing an entire season to injury? Good business there.

I never thought I'd have to say this as a Chelsea supporter but yes, we bloody well do! Not as much as we need some other positions covered though.

Apparently Van Der Wiel. Atleast that's what Arnesen said. Van Der Wiel is at the top of our summer shopping list but for now (January) we must focus on a central defender...

If true that spells the end for Bosingwa. Interesting to see that all Portugese players seem to be on their way out if they haven't left already.

Van der Wiel would be an interesting purchase. I don't see him as being an improvement on Bosingwa who has flopped miserably regardless of what people will say now, and we'll be spending quite a bit of cash on him. Wondering how much will be left for the midfield and the attack.

There aren't a lot of better right backs in Europe at his age. Would be a great signing and I'm happy the club are looking to young people like Gregory and Sanchez. Now it's the time to close the deals... and this seems to be the difficult part.

Is there a rule against Chelsea being interested in attacking players?

We look for at least 1 outside back every transfer window, but dont you dare link Chelsea to an attacking midfielder we dont need those around our club.

My thoughts exactly. Would think we'd be better off letting Ferrira go and keeping Bosingwa

Don't think V/D Wiel would be too expensive. If we do sign him and Luiz, and let Boss and Paulo go, the defence would look like this:

RB:
Van Der Wiel
Bane
CB:
Terry
Alex
Luiz
Bane
Bruma
LB:
Ashley Cole
Van Aanholt

Not bad.

VDW is the kind of purchase we need if we are serious about building a new team.

I thought he was fantastic at the World Cup.. He is only 22 and, if he develops properly, can be a gem for us. I also doubt he will cost more than £10-15million. I have been hoping we get this lad and would also consider Concentrao, Benfica's LB. He however would cost an arm and a leg.

As much as we need to freshen up our aging attack, our back line is also ageing. Ash and Terry are 30, Boss is 28 but inconsistent, Paulo is done for. Getting VDW at 22 as initial backup for Iva until he fully adjusts to the EPL will not be a bad investment.

As for LB, we need to start figuring out if Van Arnholt is the future.

Astute buys that will break (Perhaps you mean won't break: Ed.) the bank like a VDW is what we need.

Other players we need to look into include Marin, Subotic & Sahin. High time we start making astute purchases and not breaking the bank for players in their late 20s.
