I wonder who will be his assistant? His assistant from Porto isn't coming, so is he likely to promote his chief scour, fitness coach that he's (supposedly) bringing with him? Or will he appoint someone from within Chelsea already, or bring someone completely different?

This for me is a crucial appointment for the new coaching set up, because I think we need someone with a bit of CL and PL experience if possible, but no idea where you go for that? I wonder if Steve Clarke could be tempted to hop back down to London?

Great appointment by the club, feel the same as when Jose arrived 7 years ago. That team is coming to its natural end in the next few years and AVB is the perfect man to come in and rebuild and take us forward. I just hope they stick with him and learn the lessons of Jose - this guy has the potential to be here long-term and be a major success, let's not hinder that and let's give him freedom to do that. I actually think this guy is smarter than even Jose - he doesn't have an ego, he doesn't stir up controversy for the sake of it and he's more canny. Well done to the club for getting him, thought we had no chance.

Welcome back AVB and good luck at Chelsea.

Now it's time to rebuild the squad.

Great news. Welcome (back!) to Chelsea AVB!

I just want the club to let him get on with the job - his own backroom team, fresh ideas, fresh players, let's go for it!

:D :D

Nice one Roman and co. Hope he gets to manage fully and his own way.

Good luck, now get rebuilding :)

And once again Graeme Souness proves why he couldn't make it as a manager.
Idiot.
I'd put alot of money on AVB having more managerial knowledge and talent in his little toe than Souness has in his entire body.

Fantastic appointment for us, I'm both delighted and really excited by it. 2 or 3 decent signings and a good pre-season and I've no doubt we'll be enjoying a successful season this year.

Sounds like envy to me. Secondly, he states that Ancelotti didn't make any mistakes last season, and due to 'circumstances' things didn't go his way. I think that is probably the most common excuse anyone can make for themselves. Besides, Ancelotti himself has said that it was his fault for effing things up last season. I'm sorry but nobody is going to get me down on this. Villas-Boas is a fantastic appointment by the club - one that did require some balls. Hopefully AVB is here for seasons to come.

I also feel it was very rude that Souness calls him a novice. Regardless of the strength of Porto (who by the way finished 4th the season prior), he broke some amazing records - ones that even Jose didn't. So as far as I am concerned, I'm just going to give Souness the finger and move on.

I've been looking around the internet for the reaction of other teams fans regarding the hiring of AVB - fear and envy seems to best describe the mood.
That can only be a good thing, now let's sign a couple of players that'll really make them crap their pants:)

This makes me laugh: Ian McGarry (who I now feel an idiot for defending) said two weeks ago on Radio 5 about Andre Villas Boas - "He's definitely staying at Porto for another season. He doesn't want to be seen to be stepping into Jose Mourinho's shoes. Coming to Chelsea is simply not an optionnow for Andre Villas Boas".

Right about that weren't you Ian? What excuse you trotting out for this?

Wonder what Ian McGarry 'definitely Hiddink with Van Basten' really thinks now? Can't believe I defended Ian McGarry on here. All you who slammed me for defending him - you were right.

He may have been right a few times, but beginning to realise that was more canny guesses and a bit of luck, rather than inside knowledge. Fair play, hands up, I was wrong about him.

So all those players that were linked with us because of Hiddink (Turan, Sneijder) won't be coming to Chelsea now? I think the media just invented our interest...and now they maybe do the same with Moutinho, Falcao or Hulk. But it's very probable that one of them is coming to us.

Exciting appointment. I'm really excited to see his work in our squad. Porto was outstanding last season, one of the best teams in Europe without any doubt.

Welcome back Andre! Make us dream!

This is easily the best day I've had for quite a long time. Just discovered that I got a 2:1 in my final year exams at university and Chelsea have appointed one of the best and most promising young managers in Europe. It will be fantastic having a eloquent, passionate and tactically-astute manager on the touchline again. Whatever happens next year, it's not going to be dull!
