Chelsea looking to add Serie A star to Mata signing

Chelsea will make a move for Fiorentina's Stevan Jovetic as soon as the deal for Juan Mata has been finalised.

The Spain international is set to sign on at Stamford Bridge subject to a medical after Valencia accepted a £23.5m bid from the Londoners and now Jovetic could be joining him. The 21-year-old Montenegro international is a highly-rated forward who sprung into the consciousness of observers on these shores with an excellent brace against Liverpool in the Champions League as an 18-year-old in 2009. His development has been stymied by injury problems including a cruciate ligament injury that ruined the 2010/11 campaign but Blues boss Andre Villas-Boas feels that it is worth taking a risk on the player.

The Portuguese has been less than impressed with some of Chelsea's forward play over the first two matches of the season despite the wealth of options at his disposal. Salomon Kalou and Florent Malouda have disappointed in the support striker roles and look to be on their way out of the club and a new attacking triumvirate incorporating Fernando Torres, Mata and one other, possibly Jovetic.

Although initially valued at around the £20m mark, Villas-Boas is confident that he can pick up the hitman for as little as £10m.

They're not great sources (Fanatix, Tribal Football) admittedly, but we're being linked with Jovetic again. Reliability of the source aside, I'd be surprised if it happened as he probably feels he owes Fiorentina a season, but I think he'd be a tremendous signing, especially at the (ever so slightly dubious) fees quoted.

Obviously there's an element of risk signing a player who has just recovered from a major injury, but I believe that given a season, he'll pick up from where he left off and sooner than later everyone will come sniffing.

Any idea when his contract expires? Could be available at a bargain, or alternatively these articles may be popping up as a precursor to a contract extension.

Well, there is that...

A Google search for the last 7 days seems to suggest that contract talks are 'underway'.

lol I dont want to be a cynic because I think jovetic is pure class. so yes, for the price he would be the best signing of the year. such a good player, amazing really.

He is really good but doesn't he play as a second striker ? ( correct me if I'm wrong ) and we've got loads of that lot.

Extremely talented lad, that's for sure. But he had a serious injury last season and has to work to find his best form. I don't think signing him right now is a good idea, but keep an eye on him.

Only if one striker leaves.

His current deal expires in 2013 and yes he isin talks to extend his Fiorentina contract as his club has rumoured to have already made him an offer,

So I think it is one of those that Chelsea's name is used to get the best deal for the player.

He was out for the whole season last year with cruciate ligament. We don't need another long term injury on our hands seeing as we had quite a few last year. Maybe wait until Jan to see how he much he has recovered before throwing money at an injured player.

The injury represents a concern however this risk may result in his availability at a knockdown price.

I'd love to see him here, especially for that kind of price should he be cleared medically.

Regardless of how much we would like to have him, the source and timing gives this information the credibility/ likelyhood rating of 0.

Move on people, there's nothing to see here.

Doubt we'd get him if we're signing Mata.

he is great talent but I don't think he will come
this type of player Chelsea dont look for them

beside his agent said

“I’ve read of the interest from Chelsea boss Andrea Villas Boas, but these are just rumours,” agent Arzen Ramadani told Sport Mediaset.

“I’ve not been contacted by anybody.

“Jovetic is very happy at Fiorentina and he has the intention of staying loyal to his contract,” added Ramadani.

“If Chelsea want him then they would have to speak with Fiorentina first and then, if necessary, with us.”

Not sure what you mean here - which type of player don't Chelsea 'look for'?

Doesnt look to solid to really get hopes us but this player has it. I think he is definitely going to be a huge success later on and I hope we snap him. IMO has the potential to go on to be one of the best in the world easily.
