Wrong. Not a scapegoat everyone is culpable in this, as for him I don't think I have seen such a poor player in a Chelsea shirt for a long time.

Oh and Bosingwa in there too.

Well you'd have got some serious abuse if you'd said Maryless or Bosingwa were poor back in September or October. But of course, now the results are going against us it is revisionist time.

This. And he's been close to the worst player in a Chelsea shirt for a series of consecutive games now...so why does AVB continue to select him? He simply has no idea how to tackle, and his attempts to find a teammate with a forward pass are almost comical.

He had the third worst passing accuracy against Napoli(71%) behind Drogba and Cech!

Zaffo, you point is very well taken. However, my qualm is on a team where we have specialist players (read competent for specific roles), why are we relying on a player (Merieles) who is not particularly good at anything in midfield - I guess apart from mobility? The only answer I can think of is AVB promised Roman attacking football by any means necessary even. What is the club's objective? Surely CL football next season is a bare minimum unless that expectation has been reduced by Roman. At this rate we are closer to finishing 8th than 4th. Clearly, we don't have many midfielders with mobility/ball possession combination. Based on that definition only Mata and Essien will start in central midfield which obviously won't suffice. So it goes without saying that a professional manager for an ambitious club is expected to adjust his tactics & philosophy to fit the best tools in his box rather than relying on a half baked option like Meireles in midfield solely because he is mobile and can interchange at the expense of Cech & the defenders running for their lives.

If you wish to see it that way, sure. Mobility is just as important though, you have someone who is more cumbersome and you're going to have just as many issues. You're right, Meireles is a bit of a jack of all trades sort of player, but again that's through no fault of his own. He's been relied upon too heavily for the sort of player he is, which wouldn't have been the case had we managed to sign Modric. But alas, we didn't and Meireles has had to take up some of that extra slack. More so when Essien's been out for much of the season, Mikel has had his injury issues and Lampard quite inconsistent and on the decline himself. Leaving Romeu, who came in and done well at times, but others also showed his inexperience. So it's not like we're brimming with choices. Raul might not be the best passer, the best tackler or the biggest goal threat but he works hard and as mentioned, he offers a better dynamic in midfield, which allows for more balanced transition and fluidity in the middle. In general, he does read the play well and has shown that during the season, but he also done something that basically none of the others do- which again relates back to being more dynamic. He makes forward passes to break the lines, but then follows it up. He did it a few times against Napoli, where he'd pass the ball forward and then rotate through the middle. You don't get that with the others who can play that deep role. They usually just play short backwards or sideways passes. This is the exact reason why Raul plays as often as he does. He actually isn't as horrendously bad as people here makes him out to be- they just tend to see what's on the surface and not the little things inbetween the lines.

You say AVB is petty and near childish, but what about some of our players? Shouldn't quite a few of them swallow their own pride and egos and work with the coach? It goes both ways. And at the end of the day, the coach picks the side. It's then the players job to execute their roles on the pitch. Something that's only every been done on a collective level a handful of times this season.

It's hardly a new word, but more what best explains it all. He's not the best player we have, but he does have qualities that others in his position don't. I'm sure people would still criticise and pick faults if it was Mikel in that role or even Romeu, showing his inexperience and inconsistency too. Meireles is just the go to man because he's the one on the pitch at the present. Weather that's fair or not, is down to the individual I guess.

Well as touched on before, those who are to be deemed specialist players for that deeper role have all had their own issues. Mikel with injury and form, Essien with injury and returning to fitness, and Romeu inexperience (and injury for the Napoli tie). So again, choices aren't exactly plentiful. Another factor will be that Meireles is a player who's playing for the team, AVB, and doing as he's been instructed. Unlike someone such as Lampard, who appears to have very little interest in actually listening to the coach and would have possibly been another option for the role, with Ramires being a bit more defensive himself.

AVB has adjusted though, he's pulled back the reins more with his fullbacks etc. So it's not like he's done nothing at all. That's not to say there isn't room to do more, because there is. But he shouldn't also have to bend and conform to every whim of his players either. It's not his formation is that greatly different from under previous coaches, the difference is simply roles. A less ridged system has made way for one that's a little more expansive and encourages players to move around. Which is one exact reason as to why Meireles gets the nod.

Don't get me wrong, I think AVB could adjust things more with his formation setup but he'll still be as restricted in the end regardless. A formation with more central midfielders, stretches our stocks more in that area. Mikel and Romeu are deeper players. Essien and Ramires are a mix of deeper and more central players, Meireles fills all three, and then Lampard central or more advanced. The latter role being more reserved for Mata than anyone else. While a change might look good on paper, we'll still encounter issues. Thus the 4-3-3 is stuck with because that is seemingly the formation of choice and what AVB used quite effectively at Porto.

AVB's hands are quite tired really because of the limited nature of quite a few players we have, thus he's making do. That aside though, the players need to be just as, if not more responsible for the current state of the club. There's been many a game where we've lost games down to individual mistakes and nothing to do with tactics or what not. Yet, AVB still takes the heat for that.

What's scares me is the possibility that he might actually see out his contract as a regular starter and even get a contract extension if AVB remains in charge.

Well I know if earthshine was here he would clap at this while shedding a tear simultaneously.

On Meireles,I feel he is a decent squad player albeit a bit on the expensive side yet Lampard still is better but I kinda understand why AvB played him though that decision was wrong. He has been quite shocking recently and if the stat about Meireles starting the past 16 games is true then I don't know why he would feel the
need to play better.
Its squeaky bum time now and AvB needs to change tactics and formation that suits the team and I wish he does so though it is unlikely.

It's from Daily Mail but they are reporting that Meireles is thinking of leaving the club after what happened to AVB.

Doubt any of us would be in tears if he does leave.

To me he's a great squad player. AVB should never have picked him mercilessly but he looks good when coming in to give rest to others. Personally id rather give our youth a chance than players like him, so I hope he goes, I hope we get our money back, and I hope we trust in our squad/youth a bit more for the 'smaller' games.

Ironically he's played some of the best football of his life (certainly this season) since AVB was replaced which suggests a misplaced anger. Maybe if AVB used him in positions that come naturally to him playing alongside specialists in a system that fits round pegs in round holes, just maybe may not have looked so ineffective under AVB (as most Chelsea players did).

AVB was naive in playing Meireles as a DM most of the time.

maybe he didn't deserve to play so many games consecutively at the expense of saint frank, but for someone to post that they couldnt understand how he ever became a professional footballer?

Yes, I think that that is ridiculous. No, he's not the greatest and is limited as a midfielder, but I *do* think he's a useful squad player. He's pretty mobile and can buzz around in the attacking third. Got a good shot on him, too. And he was 'only' £11m or so? I think over the whole season he's done ok. No more, no less. If he leaves, fine, if he stays - fine.

Meireles at best is a half decent squad player, he can score the odd goal, but will never be able to fill franks boots ! Next season I'd like to see Josh come back to the bridge and given a run in the side, its about time our young players had a chance alongside our most experienced players
