Good player who can contribute a lot attacking wise, great attitude, good work rate and knows the manager. Thunk he will prove to be a very astute signing. Won't play every game probably but will still make an important contribution. Can still see Modric coming next summer though. Good work, kept it quiet all day when they must have been working on it, and what we need. Pleased with this.

I think we needed at least one more body in midfield, if Meireles is that body then fair enough. I don't think he will bring much different to the team necessarily but we needed some depth and will rotate well with Lampard I feel.

It's better than nothing, and probably will be handy if any of our main players are injured.

It does seem like we were desperate when we got shafted by the modric deal.

I'm sure maybe in January we will be signing more.

We got knocked back on Modric - thank goodness if the prices bandied about are anything to go by - and Meireles couldn't put in the transfer request until the Benayoun deal was done.

It's been no secret that we were interested in him.

Interesting to note: people are complaining about his age, but never about Benayoun's, who's three years older. C'est la vie. I guess it's because people know so little about Raul.

Another thing is perhaps AVB needs to start playing 4-2-3-1 rather than his favoured 4-3-3 considering of the players we have at the moment.

I'll take it. I think those who aren't rating Meireles creativity, he's not a ball winner in the Essien/Ramires mold. He's not a bad plan B after missing out on Modric and I believe that he can provide a bit of ability from the midfield. Meireles had stepped in quite well for Gerrard last season and Villas-Boas will know him because he was at Porto for 2 months before he was bought by Liverpool at the end of the window last year.

The only reason we left it so late is because Benayoun had to leave before we could bring in someone else. If I counted correctly, we could not have brought in Modric or anyone else beyond Mata without letting someone go to meet the HG rules for both the PL and the CL.
