Emenalo has given us some consistency behind the manager carousel. Would also argue that he's done a very impressive job of providing both two title winning teams with (relatively) small net output and an impressive array of squad options through the loan army. The only problem right now is a philosophy clash: While Chelsea have a lot of players that should be skillful enough for the first team, not a lot of them have that piss n vinegar that Conte seems to want. If we actually kept a manager for more than 2 seasons for a change, the recruiting guys might get a chance to re-adjust the supply chain to his needs...

For all the calls here, we're missing out on two very important but fundamental points: 1. Conte plays just 2 CMs because his system is so tight it allows CBs to do the passing. Our problem used to be depth at that position. It's not anymore: With Fabregas a lock as the playmaker, you have all other midfielders vying for the spot beside him. So CM is not a problem. 2. A look at the important positions in this system shows you immediately what we lack to play it: WINGBACKS! Assuming our CBs are good enough at this passing malarkey, we still need at least 4 players that can bomb up and down the pitch for 90 minutes and both attack and defend properly. I'd be very surprised if we didn't add at least two of the Mauricio Isla type players. And that's assuming Baba and Dave live up to Conte's expectations. (Eden will never play Wingback. He's likely to be one of the striker pair, IMO)

Nice to see a return to more fruitful debates. I'd have to say both sides have a point here. It probably depends on your own expectations. Personally, I can say I've been a bit disappointed (which puts me in zaffo's camp) with the way our youth players have been handled. Sure, there's many (very viable) excuses, but if Droy was to add his view here, he'd say that all of our "youth" recently were already established pros by the time Mou got his hands on them. The unproven (Chelsea made, for the most part) haven't got a look in so far. That involves Bamford/ Lukaku not getting spots in the squad because of the likes of Torres, Remy, Drogba or Falcao. Or someone like Atsu, Traore or Thorgan being sent away in favour of Salah or Cuadrado. We've spent the summer throwing money at an average John Stones and ending up with Papy, while our own (incredibly talented) Andreas Christensen was sent out to Gladbach, where he'll most likely not see that much more time than he would have here... It's not all about picking the matchday squad and subs. It starts with picking them for the squad at all.

^^ How do we know Papy's best position is CB unless he's tried in other positions? Obviously that happens in training and we're not privy to those experiences, but dismissing it right off the bat because of some more or less accurate label seems stupid to me.

^ Specifically Papy: He's athletic and fast. Not so good at positioning and timing. Sound like a left sided Ivanovic. So it's not too far fetched to imagine him at LB.

Ugh, I could do without the "he's an X, he needs to play X" all the time. It's fine if you're talking about our established players. But for people we haven't even seen play, players who barely have 100 matches to their name or ones that have successfully played "out of position" for so long that they're no longer out of position it's just nuts.
  7. New Stadium Plans

I like it. I'd have expected some more arches or something, but it works. It looks spartan and rustic, intimidating and a bit mysterious. Whatever they name it, I doubt we'll ever call it anything other than Stamford Bridge. Which is a major reason no one wants to name-sponsor it.

(^ Meant to say that City aren't actually strengthening.) Meanwhile, mid table sides have practically exploded. Wouldn't be surprised to see a fair shake up regarding the "established" top sides. Would not be surprised to see Pool, Tottenham or United in the bottom half of the table, come the end of the season.

Strange transfer window, not just for Chelsea. City splashing the cash, Arsenal failing to really make something of their squad (DM, ST missing), United with some highly questionable activity, Chelsea going for the bargain bin. If Liverpool weren't still overpaying for average talent, I'd question if all this was actually real.

So it looks like Stones decided not to ruin his career by joining us. We'll just go for a guy that never had much of a career to start with. This transfer window is all kinds of weird. I actually like the set-up of the squad, DMs aside, because it really looks like a few youngsters may be getting a shot. A horrible start to the season may have already cost us the title, we really have nothing to lose by blooding the likes of Traore, Kenedy, RLC, Baba and Zouma. Give the cups a fair go and use sensible rest and lots of rotation to make the top four with as little effort as possible.

^ Couldn't have put it better myself. I, for one, am happy this mad deal seems to be off. Also, I'm pretty impressed how the nutty Everton manager seems to have gotten under some people's skins. I have a hard time taking him seriously, to be honest.

^^ No defender in the world is worth 40m, much less an average one (which is what Stones currently is). I'm all for buying young and promising players, but I don't see the point in a deal that would still be expensive, if Stones became the best defender ever. Similarly to the Falcao deal, this doesn't offer a lot of upside for Chelsea.

Everbody would do well to chill out a bit. A few more days until we can retire from this thread until January. And resume bitching about *insert your favorite target here* and the referees.

Zhang Linpeng. The only Chinese player that might stand a chance of playing somewhere in Europe, IMO. Don't know if he's for us, but he's an Ivanovic type RB/CB, relatively big (I say relatively, because he's about 6 foot, positively a giant by Chinese standards) and athletic. The new rules apparently make it quite easy: Transfer fee + wages need to surpass 10m. But yes, my guess it's mostly a PR thing. The Chinese market is MASSIVE and virtually untapped.

Didn't want Stones at 26m. Really don't want him at 40m. Everton are doing us a favour.
