Times reporting a £10m for the Brazilian Benfica central defender. He is 23 so, if true, would make sense as a target

It makes sense when you look at the ages of the central defenders: Alex (28), Terry (29), Carvalho (32).

We'd all like to see Bruma given a chance, but he is still very inexperienced and Carvalho may be let go.

Of course it all depends how many right backs we have in the squad next year and whether Ivanovic will be playing RB or CB

Chelsea have offered about £10 million for David Luiz as they attempt to rejuvenate an ageing central defence.

The Benfica player has gained a reputation as one of the most promising in Portugal, leading to the Brazilian being courted by Manchester City and Real Madrid this summer.

Frank Arnesen, the Chelsea sporting director, watched the 23-year-old last season, including when he appeared at left back in the 4-1 defeat by Liverpool in the Europa League quarter-final, second leg.

Benfica claim that he will not leave for below the £40 million release clause in his contract, which has four years left.

Alex, at 28, is the youngest of Chelsea’s recognised central defenders at Stamford Bridge. Ricardo Carvalho is 32, John Terry 29 and Branislav Ivanovic, who has played there but is primarily a right back, 26.

29 and 28 aren't old ages for a CB at all, add another at 26 and for CB's who usually go on longer there are absolutely no issues with age. You'd still expect a 32 yr old CB to be in his prime, just unfortunate Carvalho's been injured for large parts of the past two seasons.

If our centre backs were all five years older, then you'd be looking at rejuvenating that part of the team, but they aren't.

This may well be in preparation for Carvalho leaving. If he did, then we'd probably need a bit more in the squad in that position; I'd say considering he's young and highly rated, £10m sounds about fair. Also, remember Carvalho was £20-oddm when we signed him in 2004 and values & estimations have risen since then.

I'd agree that CBs peak later than midfielders or strikers, but to have a central defensive partnership of two 32 yeard olds could be fragile. The prem has so many pacey players, and with JT already quite slow, that could be asking for trouble.

Surely we shouldn't wait until our CBs are five years older before rejuvenating? It is surely better and makes more financial sense to look for a younger player now and let him slowly take over from RC/JT/Alex. I'd argue that where Manu have been better than us in the last 5 years is that they buy for the future and so have players ready to step up rather than us buying to go straight into the team.

Yes, we all hope Bruma has a future at Chelsea, but he is still only 18. we will need to have more than just him an ivanovic in 6 or 7 years time

In six or seven years... I'm sure there will be CB signings in future windows, but at the moment we have more essential priorities.
