Probably as good a starting point on a long slippery slope....shame though. I think also there was a gradual turn away from the National side as well or perhaps a different attitude.....'66 felt like the whole country ...especially our Mums..were united and all in taking into account the older generation viewed the Final in a different light with not so old memories of 39/45. The Boys of 66 felt like extensions of ourselves and our club support, somewhat illusionary but far closer to the fans than the more distance wealthy class of players today. The story of Jackie Charlton on the p*** with a stranger after the celebrations rings true of that generation (and Wor Jackie)...can you imagine one of the spoilt darlings of today mixing at such a modest level?...yeah cynical and very OG today!
