  1. Chelsea 1 West Ham 1

We need someone like Hiddink upstairs as director of football with a committee of former players. Ideally Lampard, Drogba, Terry- Hiddink and those three completely understand Chelsea Football Club. Hiddink, like the late Cruyff at Barcelona, is a believer in the ‘total football’ philopsophy, let’s apply that to our coaching techniques throughout the club and integrate our squads better. Head hunt scouts from Europe that complement that philosophy- Ajax, Barcelona stand out. Luis Enqrique would be a coach/manager that complements that style. Form a committee of the ‘former players’ board, scouts, Enrique, Hiddink and Abramovich and decide a five year strategy to build a culture and deliver long term success as we move to the new stadium.

I just hope we’re planning properly. I don’t think we are, and our opponents this afternoon are the marker of the sort of level we’ll be competing at for the foreseeable.

Is it the end of May yet?

I’d bet that Solanke report was originally published as an April fool.

If we’re not actively looking to replace Emenalo as technical director and Abramovich is indeed looking to take on those responsibilities, then we can kiss goodbye to our era of being a competitive and big club, since you can’t expect to have folk with no footballing experience run a football club successfully without outspending everybody (which Roman is not prepared to do anymore). As I’ve mentioned several times, this summer we’ll be at a cross roads and empowering the ownership is the total opposite of what we need to do.
  6. Antonio Conte

Suggestions in the paper today that we’re considering Lampard as a new manager. Maybe bringing him in as caretaker until the end of the season with a view to having him as part of the coaching set up could be a decent idea. Gives him a bit of experience before fully implementing him into the coaching staff (most likely as assistant), would also help with planning changes to the team. Most importantly, Roman trusts him.

There’s really not much point sacking Conte now. The season is over. That being said, we do need preparations in place now. We need to know who the new Director Of Football is, what our agreed goals are, what our ethos is going to be going forward and who will form the coaching team. Big sweeping changes and a whole lot more communication and common respect are clearly needed for us to remain a big club without spending PSG money.

A Sabitini/Allegri combination could be decent. As time passes I’m less and less convinced by the Belletti links. We need some experience in there. Not sure Inter are the best benchmark for where we want to go, mind. Would like to do what City have done and explore bringing some of the Barcelona backroom in and bring in better integration between the academy and senior squad with an underlying playing philosophy determining the basis of our coaching.

Can only really judge the board on how they react now. I honestly believe we’re at a cross roads where we can build up a squad and tram culture that will be able to compete long term in a new stadium or he other option is we basically end up as a slightly better version of West Ham. Our existing model is not sustainable, so what happens now?

Season over. All our focus now needs to be on the changes we make in the summer.

For me, Fabinho would be the perfect partner for Kante. Fairly pacy, good on the ball but defensive minded, great with interceptions, tackles etc. A defensive Midfielder that’s confident on the ball but can also play as a right back. As for a creative player, I’d have an inside forward type that can drop a bit deeper like Asensio or Lemar, leaving Hazard to play a free-er role and Morata as a target man.

The story is basically picked up by a Spanish tabloid and in turn reported by The Sun. It basically says ‘we’ve bid but it won’t be enough’. Any paper as unreliable as The Sun saying a club is linked but the bid they’ve made won’t be enough, for me, is just making the story up. There’s nowhere near enough legitimacy in the story to be digging people out over it. Regardless, I personally feel centre Midfield and attacking Midfield/Wide positions are a much higher priority than a striker.

I wouldn’t agree with that sentiment. He looked a bit green and a bit of a pace merchant but was a useful player with potential, I remember him scoring one against Arsenal, he might have picked up a couple more too. Cuadrado looked consistently dreadful and De Bruyne looked bright against Hull but had a terrible attitude for the following games. Lukaku always looked poor whenever I saw him play for us. Of the three, Salah’s sale is the most unforgivable IMO. He looked bright for us, very bright for Fiorentina and Roma. De Bruyne is the most catastrophic mistake, but I can forgive the board/Jose for selling him.

Fabinho, Asensio and Bailey would be my three targets. Bailey I’d probably loan straight out, though.

United apparently preparing to sell Martial. I think that could end up being for them what selling Salah and De Bruyne has been for us.
  16. Antonio Conte

Sacking Conte right now solves absolutely nothing. The bigger issue is our long term standing as a club, huge decisions to be taken- much bigger than anything we do in the remainder of this season.
  17. Antonio Conte

Those calling for the replacement of manager after manager are missing the point. We’ve been a boom and bust club. One good season, good awful one, up and down. We’ve never been able to build a real culture at the club because of the chopping and changing and the chaos, but pretty much through brute force, a lot of resources and strong short term management we’ve been able to make the most of it. If we have to replace the manager we simply have to build something from the board downwards, it requires backing, a clear ideology and patience. If we don’t do this, given we don’t have a financial advantage over other clubs anymore, it’ll be a struggle to remain a top club. We have to get smart and fast.
  18. "If I Was Roman Abramovich, I'd......."

Conte's hair has never been anything but tragic since managing us. Love the guy, though.
  19. Antonio Conte

I don’t see much harm in keeping Conte on until the summer. He hasn’t lost the team and he can still get us somewhere. Clearly (and sadly) both sides need a fresh start in the summer, but not sure what having a caretaker in place instead of Conte will achieve.
  20. Antonio Conte

Having Carlo back would be great, but would the board give him the respect and backing he clearly deserves, both with what he has achieved with us and what he has achieved in the game as a whole? If the answer is no, I can't see him coming back here. Enrique I can see happening and I can see him ending up like AVB. Excellent project in mind, a great vision but a lack of patience in what would be a radically different style would see him out the door before any came to fruition.
  21. Antonio Conte

Three big issues I see. 1. We replaced three top quality players in Diego Costa, Matic and Oscar, largely, with inadequate squad players. I don't blame the club for highlighting squad depth as an area to develop with the increase in fixtures this season, however, our competitors have added depth without selling, weakening and destabilising their starting eleven. This has put us at a disadvantage. 2. The club simply needs to put more trust in it's manager. That doesn't mean the manager should have full control, there still needs to be a sensible transfer policy in place, however I feel like the manager has too little influence in decision making and we've ended up with some weird transfers as a result- particularly telling in the absence of real football experience on the board. 3. Conte's negativity is surely now having an impact on the atmosphere in training, in the dressing room, on the pitch. Maybe toxic is a bit drastic, but he needs to snap out of this sulk or this downward spiral will be irreversible with Conte at the helm. The summer is going to be huge. I sense that we've a new manager and Director Of Football on the way. He needs backing and patience and we need to get our business done swiftly with a couple of top quality additions to the starting eleven as a bare minimum. No pressure.

I don’t think Roman really needs to subsidise our spending a great deal TBH. Our revenue is such that we can go on a decent spree without generating a loss. This time I want to see us target two or three first team, top quality players, sell a few (Bats, Bakayoko, Pedro) and promote Zouma, RLC and Tammy.
  23. Manchester City 1 Chelsea 0

I can’t really blame Roman if I’m being honest. Having a low net spend has generally worked for us in recent seasons. This time it’s backfired, and it’s pretty clear the targets should have been different. Question for Roman is, how does he fix this? Does he go back to subsidising our losses? I’d imagine his solution involves sacking Conte (sadly).

Can’t remember the last time I saw any team stand off an opponent the way we did today. Embarrassing.

Honestly, I think this next summer window is absolutely critical. It's going to define where we're going to be for the next 3-4 seasons. If we lose Hazard and Courtois and approach the market in a similar fashion to last summer, we can honestly forget anything better than 5th/6th for a little while. We have to be more ambitious.
