Sorry if it has already been discussed, but any chance we can make a Courtois + cash for Oblak deal happen? Even if it wouldn’t go through, it would raise doubts about his rationale for a move to Madrid being driven for family reasons.
  2. Chelsea 1 Barcelona 1

Not a bad result to take into the away leg I feel. Had we won 1-0 today, in the next match Barca would likely come out strong and we would probably be trying to defend for 90 mins. Other teams have gone there with first leg leads in recent times, and been unable to defend them. In 2012, we took the 1-0 lead over there, and started poorly as they took it to us. This could all be coincidental, however a 1-1 away result can often lead to complacency for the team hosting the 2nd leg. Let’s hope this gives us extra motivation to play some good attacking football there - I think we’ll need to score 2, and I think we can.

Indeed. Also the possibility of talking about getting higher wages coming back in January, and we would presumably pay a smaller transfer fee?
  4. Transfer Talk Topic

Not sure of the relevance of what other clubs in other leagues might be doing?

Cheers Bob! Hopefully doesn't happen, but if it does, you heard it here first ;)
  6. Transfer Talk Topic

Yes. Just wondering if technically possible, within UEFA regulations? Not saying it will happen. P.S. Not smoking anything, but reasonably drunk, for what it's worth ;)

Just wondering, could the following situation go down? We sell Matic to Inter, as we refuse to sell to United. United offer to buy Perisic from Inter, and Matic in top. Topping up the Perisic fee with some extra fee for Matic. Possible? Any ramifications if it did happen? I know it is Juventus who are supposedly in for Matic, but any chance Inter/United doing such a deal?

It is - but it's part of the reason why English clubs end up paying a lot more. They should really just allow it as it goes on everywhere, and it would be a level playing field.

I think so. If that happened it was likely after the Chinese option went off the table, and we were still confident of getting £65M+ for him this window from elsewhere. I can't see them ever spending this much..
  10. Transfer Talk Topic

Agree, it is primarily him, but they would be doing whatever they could to reduce the price.
  11. Transfer Talk Topic

Haha, I am sure they don't need to, but I can imagine them stoking the fire wherever they can :) I can't imagine his agent would be promoting anything that drops their cut..
  12. Transfer Talk Topic

Absolutely. I wouldn't be surprised if they have been tapping him up, causing some of what's been going on to try force the price down, by warding off any competition.

Value doesn't mean as much if a player publicly states there is only one team he'll play for.

Hopefully Madrid spends the money they are getting for Morata on De Gea. Putting United in a tough spot, and improving our chances of keeping Thibaut long term.

Agree this is likely to happen, providing we don't bring anyone else in to start at RWB. If we were to, I can't see Azpi being dropped, and of Luiz/Cahill/Rudiger, Cahill seems most at risk.
  16. Transfer Talk Topic

That's a toss up for me. I would be happy for Cahill to start, but I don't think we have gone after Rudiger not to - especially as we were apparently interested last season too. Also a chance of both of them and Luiz starting, with Azpi taking Moses' spot.
  17. Transfer Talk Topic

Agree, he would be the obvious upgrade if we can do it. Willian would be starting until Hazard is fit also. The bigger issue though is squad depth - so I'd expect any other signings to not start (unless Moses or Alonso is upgraded).
  18. Transfer Talk Topic

I am guessing.. Courtois Azpi - Rudiger - Luiz (Cahill starting cups) Moses - Kante - Bakayoko - Alonso Pedro - Hazard Morata (assuming done) * I'd expect Willian to be heavily rotated in, so too Fabregas and Batshuayi.
  19. Transfer Talk Topic

No they wouldn't, but as far as we know, they aren't coming. I think any of those players would expect starting positions, or reasonable assurances of such. The point I was meaning to make, is that teams such as Monaco or Leicester, have more of a chance of getting players to that next level, as they don't necessarily expect them to be at the level to begin with, which we would.

Whilst I agree with all of this, realistically would we be able to sign these up and comers to only be able to offer them a role on the bench? Particularly when our young players are wanting to leave (have left) for similar reasons. It is also hard for any of these players to show they can take the next step if they aren't getting consistent game time. The only way I can see this working for us is if one of our younger players gets a break due to injuries etc. Fortunately we haven't had many injuries, which I think is reflected in the lack of first team opportunities.

Keeping an eye on the bookies odds today, Morata to Chelsea was 2/1 a few hours ago, now 1/6. Looking likely now based on that.

I think there is a strong chance we might keep Cech and Courtois. Playing Courtois in the league and Cech in the cup matches primarily. We may review things come January, if one of them agitates for a move, or if very good money comes in for either, I just don't see us being forced to sell either right now. Schwarzer was resigned for another year, but that doesn't necessarily mean he's 2nd choice, Hilario was not retained, so it could be that he takes the 3rd spot.
  23. Mark Schwarzer

Excellent news. Hopefully this is confirmation that we won't be spending 6+ million on Ruddy.
  24. I think this is a completely different situation here - Madrid equally want Mourinho replaced, it is of mutual agreement to terminate the contract, and it will be terminated at the end of the season - this isn't a case of one party wanting to keep the status quo, and needing to be compensated for breaking the contract early.
