Although I agree and have similarly always said that he is not great defensively, the anchor in a 4-3-3 is his best role and in it he is pretty good. Such a role is shielded by CBs and 2 midfielders and his strengths really come to the fore. It is telling though that Jose started Luiz before him in a big game. In the build up to the Suarez penalty shout I focused on Mikel and he jogged from the half way line to the penalty spot, never once taking his eye off the ball. That is something I would expect from Luiz but luckily Liverpool's midfield is quite average.

Agreed. He is nothing but a slightly more progressive Mikel. They have very similar strengths. And neither are really suited to a 2-man midfield. Although we saw last night the benefit of having a big presence in midfield. Luiz absolutely dominated in the air and if you can stop a team from passing through their defense as we did with great pressing, such an ability is really handy.
  3. Official: Juan Mata Leaves For Man United

. When was the last time two top clubs have had a big swap deal? Ibrahimovic to Barca was probably the last. I think if PSG came in with a big offer the club would give it serious consideration at the end of the season. We are too strong in that department to keep everyone happy going forward. I'm sure KDB wouldn't mind moving up a rung and then there's still Moses, Marin (yes), and the likes of Piazon, Atsu and Thorgan Hazard to consider. Not that I want it to happen but I can honestly see Mata moving on next season. A player of his calibre should not be 4th/5th choice anywhere.

Not the right audience I'm afraid, but well done. I wanted Willis about a year and a half ago but his price is ridiculous now. Not sure we have many options left for the kind of football Mourinho wants to play. Cavani, Willis and Rooney are/were the most suitable. Although any half-decent striker would put us in with a good shout to win the title. I'd rather not rush it and I'm sure that is the reason for Jose saying there will be no January purchase. TIming is imperative. One transfer window can be the difference between paying 50mil for Torres or 38mil for Aguero.

I'll have to take your word on that because I've never noticed him in the few games I've watched Columbia. Paulinho's comparison to Lampard though is a bit strange to me. I'd rather say he is a poorer version of Toure. We definitely should have been in for him. Talking about his form at this stage doesn't really mean much, Ramires was very poor in his first 6 months. The midfield is the one area I don't really care about bring through youngsters. Quality in that area defines a team.

Well it would be downright absurd for me to prefer the player I haven't seen... My point was that if the choice is between two similar players I'd prefer the one who is younger and has ties to players already at the club. Hardly rocket science.

When he signed and nearing the end of preseason Eddie Newton gave an interview and he expressed that the staff, manager included, thought they had made a mistake buying Hazard because of how poor he was in the training sessions. But then match time came and they were surprised at how good he really was. Sounds like a Mail rehash job. There is no way he would be training poorly and playing under Jose.

Don't know how I feel about this buy and not because of the player. We had the opportunity to get Paulinho for a similar fee. A Brazilian national, 3 years younger and comfortable playing alongside Ramires. I watched Paulinho quite a bit, but have seen nothing of Guarin and reports suggest that they are similar in style. I know which one I'd prefer...
  9. Chelsea Reserve & Youth Team

Another 5-0 win for the u21s including an Izzy Brown hattrick and one more for Swift. Some serious top young talent in the ranks.
  10. Following Chelsea's Loans

It's amazing what players can accomplish outside of the team. Reputations shoot through the roof quite regularly. KDB is the answer to everything. Lukaku will tear attacks apart over here, even though looking painfully average in many games this season alone. It only goes downhill from there.
  11. Champions League draw

More of a contender than when we won it. 2nd in the most competitive league in the world means nothing?

Proved to be false by the Columbian government no less. I agree though, would love to see him here but not for anywhere near the reported fee. I'm still hoping we go in for Rooney again.

I don't quite agree with this. Lukaku was quite vocal in his first season about his game time and first team involvement. Naturally, a player such a this would seek assurances over playing time. Mourinho is a straight shooter, and we can postulate that he would have given no such guarantees and may even have suggested that Torres is his number one. The attempt at signing Rooney may have been the final straw for Romelu as being behind two big strikers is akin to being in reserve team. You only have to look at the number of appearances of Jovetic at City, which would be the closest situation to the one Lukaku would have been in had he stayed (with Rooney coming into the team). This issue has been blown way out of proportion. Lukaku doesn't deserve to be a starting striker at any big club. I would in all honesty play Torres all week over Lukaku. People can rightfully criticise our strikers for not scoring, but if Lukaku had been here and had two or three of his very inconsistent and mediocre performances in defeats, fans would similarly be chastising him. He would be a great option to have in tight games, but that is as far as his contribution to the team should go. No one can honestly say that Lukaku being here definitely equals more goals, and no one can convince me that he is a more complete forward than Torres or Ba.
  14. Andre Schurrle

It's pretty much a toss up between Schurrle and Willian right now. Willian is very good on the ball but lacking in the final third with his movement and execution. Schurrle is sloppy on the ball but can do real damage in the final third. Both have amazing work rate so it's great to have them in the squad.

Some rumours about Rakitic and he only has 18 months left on his contract. Haven't seen him at all really, but reports suggest he is having a fine season.
