Interesting that a few people have referenced Havertz as playing wide forward (right) whereas I always envisaged him playing as an 8 or a 10 (Mount, Barkley, RLC etc) e.g. Pulisic Werner Ziyech Kovacic Kante Havertz I'm not basing this on having watched tonnes of Havertz (although I've watched a bit) but more that I don't see Frank choosing between Ziyech or Havertz. I think both walk into our first 11 it's just a case of fitting them in.

5 seasons ago we had the likes of Courtois, Azpil, Cahill, Ivanovic, Matic, Hazard, Willian, Pedro, Fabregas, Oscar etc all relatively somewhere near their prime. That squad was night and day compared to the current squad and I'm pretty confident that the club know this and set the bar accordingly this season. In the last 3 years it's one FA Cup and one Europa League, and this season just gone has been one of, if not the weakest squad that we've had in the Abramovich era, yet we still finished joint third, got to the final of an FA Cup and at least the last 16 of the Champions League. The powers that be have clearly seen enough in Frank to back him in the transfer market this summer - and rightly so - but you're right, they will want some bang for their buck and expectations will change accordingly.

Yep same. I’ll be really disappointed if we sell Zouma before either Christensen or Rudiger. Not just because of how he’s played in the restart either. I’m a bit old school when it comes to defending and I loved watching this video of Lewis Dunk yesterday.... It got me thinking about Rudiger and Christensen and how rarely (never?) they puts their body on the line to block shots or make tackles like this...

I think you could level that accusation at almost everyone based on Saturday tbh. Azpi, James, Alonso were all playing it backwards, in a safe but uninspiring manner. Lampard talked afterwards about playing through the lines and intensity and I think that very simply, we got the goal, dropped back 10 yards due to a combination of taking the lead, being knackered and being frightened about the ball over the top (all sub-conscious actions and not deliberate) and it invited Arsenal onto us. As a result you’re being pressed which means you start passing safer, drop even deeper etc and the rest is history. Hindsight is a wonderful thing, but we really should have brought Pedro on for Azpi and gone 4-3-3 when the injury occurred. Mount would have dropped back to stop us getting overrun in midfield and we would have had more outlets for the defenders to pass to between the lines.

I don't disagree with you on the league cup and the disruption part, but I can't imagine that any PL club is going to just rock up and play a competitive league fixture having had 5-7 weeks off. So if clubs will be arranging a few 'behind closed doors' type matches again, we might as well keep the community shield.
  6. Arsenal 2 Chelsea 1

Surprised no-one has mentioned the two injury substitutions and how that really hindered Frank’s hand in being able to change things. At 55-60 minutes the game was crying out to go 4-3-3 but we only had one sub transaction to make, and that almost certainly meant Frank had to wait another 10-15 minutes to make the final 3 changes. Bad day at the office all round today. Ref was horrendous but we didn’t do enough. Hopefully we see some material changes in personnel over the coming couple of months

Surely we’d have a couple of friendly fixtures though?

Prefer Pope, or would rather not get your hopes up on the others? I’ve been advocating Nick Pope for weeks but surely if Ter Stegen or Oblak are genuinely available, you have to prioritise them? It’s not even like Pope is younger. If ever there was a window where these sorts of deals could happen, it would be this one, plus those two clubs are in well-documented financial difficulty, and would also probably prioritise selling the goalie over an outfield star player. Still feels like a lot to happen, but wouldn’t totally rule it out!!
  9. Arsenal 2 Chelsea 1

It'll be very similar to this but can't imagine any scenario where Tomori comes back into a cup final team having not played a single minute for about 6 months
  10. Doesn't need to be a 'mistake' for another goalie to have done better though does it? Actually, according to the stats, Kepa makes very few obvious blunders unlike Lloris, De Gea and Pickford etc, his all round game is just not very good. I would say that the way he is often rooted to his line and not even attempting a dive, actually makes the shot appear better. Other goalies, with different positioning, closing of angles, better footwork, stronger wrists and better anticipation would save a lot of shots without them even looking spectacular.

Timo Werner's first interview on the official CFC website today literally refers to Cech as the Sporting Director. I think you are getting hung up on semantics personally

No but since the re-start specifically when he's been fit, it's been a 6 week sprint to get top 4, so you're generally going to pick your best team - and I'm not for one minute advocating he is better than Willian or Pulisic right now. Over an entire season however, you have periods such as Christmas where most heavily rotate, League and FA Cup games, and even CL games against lower opposition or where we may have already qualified - plenty of opportunity for someone like CHO to get 20-25 appearances over a season. I also think a big factor is how we are defending as a team currently. There is no doubt in my mind that if we were keeping clean sheets more frequently, CHO would be getting more minutes, but the reality is Willian plays because he is more disciplined, works harder and doesn't lose the ball as frequently. I realise this isn't a ringing endorsement of CHO either, but just the reality of the situation and should be factored in before he is written off. Everyone pines for youngsters to be given a chance and then discards them when they don't come in and score or assist in their 10 minute cameo (not aiming that at you btw, just the feeling that I get generally with regards to Hudson-Odoi)

Incredibly harsh on the one hand because I don’t think you meant that as a compliment, although on the other hand, if our academy produced players that went on to make 350 appearances in the PL, scoring 75 goals, 60 appearances in the champions league and achieved 47 England caps you can’t really knock that. Specifically in relation to CHO however, he hasn’t actually had a run of games this season and it’s completely unfair to judge him until that happens because most players need that level of sharpness - particularly one as explosive as Callum. I think there’s a player there and with a bit of work on the defensive side of his game, I’m sure we’ll see more of him next season (I don’t think we’re going to loan him personally)
  14. Liverpool 5 Chelsea 3

Leading by 3 goals against the team in third, with the best defence in the league by a mile and attained pretty much 100 points. I've just posted what team I would pick for Wolves, personally I'd opt for Willian, but I thought it was an interesting observation
  15. Chelsea 2 Wolverhampton Wanderers 0

Caballero Rudiger Zouma Azpi James Mount Kovacic Alonso Willian Tammy Pulisic I would go with Willy given that Kepa's confidence is shot to pieces and there will be a huge focus on everything he does. Plus I'm expecting Willy to play in the cup final as he has played every round until now. I'd swap what side of the defence Rudiger and Dave play for this one to deal with the threat of Traore. Mount comes into centre-midfield for Jorginho for his added athleticism, and Tammy/Giroud is a toss-up IMO

Do most clubs?? Genuine question. To me it has nothing to do with whether you played the game or not, let alone what position you were. Mourinho, SAF, Wenger, Klopp didn't play at a high level, let alone in defence.
  17. Liverpool 5 Chelsea 3

In terms of one positive last night, I really liked Hudson-Odoi finding space and breaking the defensive lines in a way that Willian has never done for us. This isn't a Willian hate post, as there are things he is genuinely world class at in his position, but his movement behind defenders has never been one of them, which is partly why he doesn't get enough goals and assists. But I thought Callum was running off the ball and getting into dangerous areas really well. If Frank can get him working hard, he could form a scarily good linkup with Reece
  18. Liverpool 5 Chelsea 3

Clearly some clubs are going to struggle and it's been well documented the challenges that the Liverpool owners have, Athletico Madrid and Arsenal face; but I don't think Corona Virus will affect all clubs Man City and Man United from the premier league could certainly afford £50m for the right player. I wouldn't put it past Wolves or Everton either. Newcastle if their takeover goes through too (and obviously us) From abroad, PSG, Bayern Munich, Real Madrid, Juventus and Inter Milan - granted some of those may have to shift a few on first but they certainly have the players to do that. Inter Milan have also just bought a player from Real Madrid for 45m euros.

Respectfully, I don’t agree with any of that. He got a hat trick against Wolves who could still finish top 4. Danny Ings has only scored two goals in a game once all season. Rashford 3 times, and Kane 4 times (so in line with Tammy’s 3) and Giroud hasn’t scored more than once for us all season but has still been brilliant. I don’t think he needs to add more skill either; where Tammy can definitely kick on next season though is to be more clinical with the chances he gets (because he gets a lot, which is a positive) and anticipate balls across the box more effectively.
  20. Manchester United 1 Chelsea 3

Giroud has been on fire since the turn of the year, and he quite rightly deserves his place in the team right now... But, let’s not forget what Tammy did for us pre-Christmas where he went and got like 10 goals in about a 2 month period - not too dissimilar to Giroud of late. I’ve just looked it up and he got 2 at Norwich, 2 at Sheff Utd and a hat trick against Wolves within 3 consecutive games. I think for his first full season with us playing top level football, 16 goals and 6 assists is a more than decent return for Tammy - particularly when you factor in that he doesn’t start every game.

I suggested Nick Pope or Aaron Ramsdale a week or so back - both very competent goalies. I’m really not meaning to stick the knife into Kepa but most of the PL GKs would be an upgrade - Patricio, McCarthy, Henderson, both of Arsenal’s GKs, Schmiechel etc and that’s just in the PL - I guess it’ll depend on the club’s appetite on how drastically they want to improve that position - I.e. Nick Pope for £35m or Oblak for £100m. As long as it’s not DDG, Pickford or Lloris I’m fairly relaxed!

For those on here that don't use Twitter, Carefree Youth (Not to be confused with Chelsea Youth) has just tweeted the following: I fully expect there to be a lot of scepticism on this, but I have generally found him to be bang on the money. He's not your typical 'in the know' transfer account either, he has been the first to break injury and other non-transfer related news. Take it as you please though...

Great stuff, thanks. Perhaps instead of the Best New Signing you could have 'Breakthrough' or 'Best Newcomer' which includes Pulisic, but also the likes of Mount, James, Tammy, Tomori etc

Worth bearing in mind with Ampadu that he spent huge amounts of time out injured with this constant back injury. Transfer Market have the injury down as 143 days which is almost 5 months. I remember Ryan Giggs coming out and comparing his injuries to Gerrard’s at a similar age and putting it down to growing. Depending on what business we do, I’d be tempted to bring him back. He could always go on loan in January, but I think he’d get a fair share of game time under Frank.
