The real problem is that the Kepa debate will always be whether he's awful, average or somewhere in-between those. I actually believe it's become a bit of a witch hunt now and not all of the so called "mistakes" he's making are as bad as people have made out. However, I struggle to think of anything he really excels at - he's decent with his feet but not outstanding and has shown pretty good reflexes at times but that's just not enough at a club like Chelsea. I can't believe anyone really thinks he's a top-class keeper just stuck behind a leaky defence or even that he has the potential to be one of the best around? That's what we need long term if we are to win the trophies that the other acquisitions we have made so far deserve.

Can't imagine that would change anything. What are we going to see at this point that we haven't already? It would need to be a Barthez or Taibi style meltdown.
  3. Transfer Talk Topic

If the deal isn't all but signed, last night won't have helped our cause at the negotiating table that's for sure.
  4. Official: Chelsea Sign Kai Havertz

It's always hard to accept at the time but it's something I think we've done very well in recent times. Diego fell off a cliff when he left and we got a great fee for him. We may well have had the best years of Hazard before flipping him for a big fee.
  5. Transfer Talk Topic

I agree entirely. Pope isn't the long term answer which he needs to be for that kind of fee. This seems to be: If Kepa works out (he won't) - great. Problem solved. We have a very capable back up and Mendy is happy because his wages have gone through the roof. If Kepa doesn't work out, we have someone to hold the fort this season. If he surprises us and plays a blinder, then problem solved. If he doesn't we've kept our powder dry in case an absolute world-beater/the right target becomes available next summer.

And just like that, any credibility when it comes to judging keepers - gone. This is madness.

Just to clarify, I'm not suggesting we sign Roberto or whatever his name was. I think you know that... but just checking haha! I know what this forum is like, someone will dig that quote out in 5 years time and use it as a stick to beat me with. I think knowing the league is less important for keepers. Plus Premier League teams have more money than most so they are more likely to demand a bigger fee. Having someone big and physically dominant would be a refreshing change of pace from the last 2 years though.

Big call to drop him for any league games or the latter stages of a cup competition no? Especially if he's as vastly superior as you say? Frank has to be seen to have given it the ol' college try with Kepa after the club paid such a huge fee for him doesn't he? When the chips were down he (and the defence potentially) didn't trust him. The massive fee and wages are the only thing keeping him here. We are building a team to win the league in 2 to 3 seasons. Do you honestly think we achieve that with Kepa in goal?

If it was that clear then there would be no question of Willy starting over him so much last season (and potentially this season if no one else is signed). Willy is unspectacular but confident and solid - not words I'd used to describe Kepa. Kepa was average in his first season. Ironically one of the things that I think have skewed peoples opinions of that season are KEPA'S penalty saves against Spurs and Frankfurt.

We could literally get that pubber that played a few games for West Ham this season in and not really be any worse off. There's nothing to miss.
  11. Transfer Talk Topic

Yeah makes perfect sense for them and their personal lives.

I genuinely don't think Ake would have improved us at all. Mostly, I'd worry that he's too small/not physical enough to change anything for our backline. Not such a problem at City where you don't have to do much defending and can play next to the 2nd best CB in the league. He'll be a fine squad player at City but I can't see him ever being anything more. I really like Sarr at Watford and Buendia at Norwich but again, I'm not sure they'd ever be more than squad players for us with the players we have coming in this summer. Grealish is very good but never worth what Villa will want for him. Other than that, I'm a bit indifferent to the players that got relegated - some great value to be had by teams lower down the table, but not much that would improve Chelsea.

Playing devils advocate here, maybe the fact they have no money and Willian is available for no transfer fee is forcing them in to making a bad deal just to get a body through the door? I can't help but feel that was the situation when they realised Luiz was available on the cheap last summer.

Sorry! I've done it now and I'll delete my post.

I just remembered I touted Cucurella a couple of months ago. Happy (and a little smug) to see us linked with him.
  16. Transfer Talk Topic

This. When you consider that these left back who cost less are a) potentially more of a gamble coming from a foreign league b) will need to be replaced sooner as they are older and c) probably cost almost as much for FFP purposes because they will be on shorter contracts for the same reason... maybe paying a bit extra isn't the end of the world? I would never pay 70-80m if it was up to me and I'm sure the club won't either... but maybe, just maybe there is a deal to be struck here...

Do you think any of the above would be comfortable playing second fiddle though? Or do you envisage Alaba being a utility man playing CB and CM enough that it doesn't matter? Genuine question.

He is also 4 years younger than Tagliafico and Telles who both play for the league champions in pretty weak leagues - the bottom of the Liga Nos and Eredivisie are nowhere near comparable to the Premier League. He's also 3 years younger than Gosens. Personally, I would be wary of signing anyone from that Atalanta side because of Gasperini and his system. They could easily be great, the team is fantastic so they aren't bad players. However, I wonder how much of it is system and fit with what they are doing there rather than individual talent. Some coaches just make teams greater than the sum of their parts. If no CL football, Covid and a transfer request can bring the price down, I still think Chilwell is a better option than the other guys listed (although I'd still like Reguilon but he hasn't even been linked as far as I know).

I think a lot of people are overlooking playing style. That wasn't as important for keepers a few years back but I think it makes a huge difference in the modern game. Onana is used to playing with a high line in front of him and playing the sweeper keeper. He is also used to playing with his feet having come up through the Barca academy and then playing in this Ajax side. Pope is definitely my second choice as he is a great shot stopper, attainable, probably reasonably priced (comparatively) and PL proven - however, he has played behind the deepest defence going and I haven't looked at the stats but I'd be shocked if he's not attempting far more long balls to Wood and Barnes up top.

I think people forget he missed a good chunk of the early season and he was probably rushed back in the hope he could settle our shaky defence. I'm interested to see what he can do with a (albeit short) preseason under his belt.

I think you are completely right that spending the funds on other positions might give us a more well-rounded squad. However, I think Havertz is potentially a generational talent and if you have a chance to sign that kind of player, you do it and worry about the nitty gritty afterwards. I would say he addresses a need for us though, in that he bring goals from Midfield which is something I still think we sorely miss. I think people need to make their peace with that fact we might not be the finished article next season and that's fine IMO. I see us being much like Liverpool 2 or 3 years ago - We are going to be ridiculously fun to watch and blow a lot of teams away. However, we might still be missing one or 2 pieces before we can really win the league a year or 2 later.
  22. Transfer Talk Topic

Or even better, some actual interest and take the money that was on offer before. The kid looks like he's a Theo Walcott at best to me.
  23. New Kits

I might well be interested once the squad numbers for next season are confirmed - I can see Pulisic going to 10 and Ziyech taking his 22 for example.
  24. Transfer Talk Topic

I knew someone would say this. You could interpret it that way... but I'd argue that Bournemouth should in theory give away more high quality shots than us (although at times this season that's felt questionable!) and yet he still saves 10% more of them than Kepa.
  25. Transfer Talk Topic

I wouldn't want him but I'm not sure you can hold his stats against him as much - he's basically at the end of a shooting gallery playing behind that Bournemouth defence and is still saving more than Kepa. I wonder what Cahill's stats would have been like for Bolton before he joined us for example.
