And that Bob, is the problem in a nutshell.
  2. Squad Status: 2020/21 Season

Well I wouldn't write them off. PSG has laid down a marker with Neymar and Real being Real it sure has the looks of a pissing contest brewing. £200m for Hazard. Would we take it? Reluctantly I guess. What would that money buy us? Two Lukaku's? Err - no thanks. There is no value out there so there's no point selling Hazard. We should do everything we can to make him stay.
  3. Alvaro Morata Gone on loan

People on these very boards said the same.
  4. Alvaro Morata Gone on loan

To be fair, I think that he has displayed that on other occassions as well this season. Not as many as you'd like granted, but he has shown glimpses of what he can be. Of course the trick is, as Droy put it in the Man U MDF, to sustain this over the course of the season. I think he's had a very strong and inspired start to his Chelsea career. Will be interesting to see how he comes along. My brain tells me he will do well because of his high base level of football in him - intelligence, movement, technique, aerial play, hold-up and link-up play. Even if he goes through a dry spell, I think his partnership with Fabregas, Hazard and possibly Pedro/Willian has much to offer besides him ending moves with goals.
  5. Alvaro Morata Gone on loan

He's movement and aerial play is very Crespo-like but he also (gulp!) reminds me of a Torres (at his peak).
  6. Alvaro Morata Gone on loan

Top post Sam. I was absolutely delighted we bought Morata (my first choice by a country mile) and so far he's delivered way above my expectations. I simply do not recognise any of the critisism that's directed towards him. Bad hold up play? Bad link-up play? Inconsistent? Not able to lead the line by himself? All comments that are wide off the mark if you ask me. Better hold up and link-up play than Costa (yes, seriously), better technique than any striker we've had since Zola, better in the air compared to anything we've had lately apart from Drogba and Crespo (same level imo) and fantastic with the ball at his feet. I think he'll be super star. This.

Where we already have Kenedy that fulfills that role. Is Da Silva better? 24 apps in League One. I think not.
  8. Transfer Talk Topic

Jay Da Silva? He plays league one football this season. I doubt he's ready to step up next season.
  9. Transfer Talk Topic

I can see where you are coming from and I'd tend to agree I'd rather see us spend less for a younger up-and-coming talent that's just the level below before being established. Whether that's Sessegnon or someone else I don't know.
  10. Transfer Talk Topic

    Quite.

I'm sorry but it's ridiculous to lambast the board or the manager at the time for selling a player who quite clearly wasn't up for it in any shape, way or form. Would I swap Salah for any of our AMs? Yes - Musonda (if you count him). At the time, he was quite clearly at the bottom of the list of our AMs and for good reason. He plays for a side that plays to his strengths. The question you should ask yourself is wether we should sink so low and build our attacking play around a player like Salah who took 3 seasons to get to this standard. It's Liverpool ffs. You think any Chelsea manager can play a player for three years before he comes good? The obvious answer is no.
  12. Alvaro Morata Gone on loan

Good point. Might also be worth noting that Torres had clocked up 386 appearances for Liverpool and Atletico before we signed him (most of them starts). Morata stood at 188 appearances for Real and Juve (most as a sub I'd imagine). Torres had played regularly from the age of 18 and had suffered some playing-style altering injuries before we decided to splash £50m on him in 2011. Morata hasn't suffered career-changing injuries, hasn't been playing a lot of football and cost us £58m + add-ons in 2017. In terms of football age and true price they're miles apart. Not to mention this... how long did it take Torres to score 6 PL games for us? One year and three months is the answer. Morata did that in just over a month.
  13. Alvaro Morata Gone on loan

Quite. If Morata has been woeful, then what has the rest of them been? Dead?
  14. Following Chelsea's Loans

I updated that list. you've said that we need more players and players that aren't stars. You've missed out on a lot of names who already play serious squad roles for teams that are better than us. Some are even automatic starters for teams better than us and quite clearly much better than our current players in that position.
  15. Alvaro Morata Gone on loan

Well to be fair, we also had Khalid Bhoulahrouz. He gave a new face to "can't defend even if his life depended on it". I've been highly critical of Lukaku as well. But his ability to score against inferior opposition can't be questioned.
  16. Alvaro Morata Gone on loan

Well it's certainly how we defend our title. 2006-07 (we had massive investments leading up to that season but entered the season with only two CBs- JT and Ricky), 2010-11, 2015-16 and 2017-18.
  17. Alvaro Morata Gone on loan

They've all been awful. Even the Bournemouth game was sub-par.
  18. Alvaro Morata Gone on loan

I'm sure United fans are also happy to see the 1-1 games of last season against mid- to lower placed teams has transformed to clear wins due to Lukaku's goals.
  19. Media / Press

That much was obvious given how easy Conte had it last season. This is how they operate. This is what they did to Jose twice and it's also something I think Conte tried to say in his last presser as well. That he had seen the media do this to other managers before him.
  20. Transfer Talk Topic

Bang on. Yes, plenty. I can't fathom why though. We've just signed 11 first eam squad players over 16 months but would need another 7 to have players to make such a system work. Let me get this straight. You've been telling everyone how Conte is a master to work with what he's got and to chose tactics based on what players he has. Yet he's signed 11 players for the first team and would require a bunch more to even have a first XI that would be suitable for a 352. What on earth is he doing? A 352 consisting of Hazard and Morata as the only attacking players has to be the very definition of a defensive set-up - especially when you consider the midfield. It's remarkable anyone would call it otherwise. But sure - let's aim for a formation that would require major surgery in attack (3 new strikers needed) and central midfield (2 creative CMs) and a new set of wing backs. Another £400m spent right there to adopt a formation that would lack all the hallmarks of a league winning side in this league. If Conte is serious about 352 I actually hope we will fire him. I can't see it being a success here and it would put an enormous pressure on our wingbacks to assist/score a lot more than they manage to do now. For me, I see absolutely no reason to move away from 3421. Absolutely no reason. As for us needing more AMs - yes. It's obvious. But I'd also like to remember that you spent the summer arguing we absolutely did not need more AMs.
  21. Transfer Talk Topic

We have 5 players for 8 positions more like. We have AM1, AM2, AM3 and S1. The generous type will say we also have S2. But where is AM4 and AM5 and S3? As for the calls for us ditching the AMs altogether and go for the ultra defensive 352? Heavens no, ditch what makes us a good side - our AMs! We don't have enough strikers to have four in every game - two playing and two on the bench. We'd need five strikers all in all and at least 5 CMs. That would be 10 players for 5 positions - so actually five players short. I can't see how 352 is more fitted to the players we have, it would require major surgery to get there. Not to mention we'd have to buy two new WBs cause the ones we have doesn't contribute offensively. So effectively 7 players before we can have any hope to see 352 played as the main formation. Imagine our attacking game consisting of Hazard, Morata, Alonso and Moses.... yikes. We would also lose all tactical variety if we did do the permanent switch to 352 because we'd have to ditch the AMs. I hope that never ever even cross our minds. I see the 352 to be used as last season - to close out games or tricky away ties in Europe. But to actually want us to move towards that as the base case? Has there ever been a winning PL side that didn't have strong attacking wide players? It's like playing American football without wide receivers. A non-starter.
  22. Transfer Talk Topic

Wow - I wasn't sure what people thought/expected but this has surprised me. I can only hope you are correct Michael! I agree we need 3+ players but think it's unlikely we'll get them in January. And to be perfectly honest, if Conte isn't going to be here come August 2018 perhaps we should wait until next summer?
  23. Transfer Talk Topic

Does anyone think we'll sign players in January? If yes, how many? Which position(s) and who are the player(s)?
  24. Squad Status: 2020/21 Season

Since you brought it up... yes - I agree. But I'm going to be slightly more greedy. GK: Courtois, Caballero, GK3(HG) CB: Azpilicueta, Luiz, Christensen, Rudiger, Cahill WB: Moses, Zappacosta, Sandro, Alonso CM: Kante, Bakayoko, Fabregas, Drinkwater, Pasalic/Van Ginkel AM: Hazard, Pedro, Willian, Richarlison, Loftus-Cheek, Palmer/Baker S: Morata, Batshuayi, Abraham 23 outfield players who have shown they are very good Championship/decent PL standard at the bottom and world class at the top. I'd be very happy with that squad. But that requires a manager who is ready to rotate. I think that Baba may very well be a much better fit in Conte's 3421/343 compared to Jose's/Rafa's/Di Matteo's/Hiddink's/AVB's 4231/433 variations. He certainly has attacking qualities and a pretty decent cross. Also a lot faster and pacier than Alonso although he's nowhere as good defensively or in the air. But a nice complement to what Alonso has now. There's some question marks still though. How long will he need to be back to full fitness? Will we go for Sandro in January? What to do with Kenedy? That remains to be seen. I don't think Kenedy makes us considerable weaker. He's nothing special, but solid enough and gives you a 6-7 most games he plays. Alonso has a higher ceiling, but his range seems to be 5-9. From what I remember, Baba was 5-7 most games for us.
  25. Following Chelsea's Loans

    Yes, like I said.
