I agree - no point in trying to find an individual to blame. At the end of the day it's not interesting, only that what has caused it is rectified asap. I do not share your take on what happens next though. Of course, taking into account all probabilities there is, in my view, an outside chance of a 2015-16 repeat. But it wasn't squad size alone that caused it. It was a contributing factor, or perhaps better explained, the said was not as full of quality as we may have initially thought. Yes we had/have a very strong core group of players. But the quality outside them was miscalculated in 15/16 imo. There Mourinho must share some blame (just to be clear on that). We also had a spectacularly badly planned pre-season that year and an even worse end of season tour after being crowned champions. Then, like now, we kept things late in terms of transfers. But we also had Mourinho's father being critically ill, and that will almost certainly have compounded Jose's somewhat erratic behaviour at times. Squad size is an issue this season. No doubt about it. I demonstrated earlier, together with Juni's post, that we lack numbers compared to all our main competitors in England and Europe bar City when it comes to usable squad players. And then City has 18 quality players. At a stretch we've got 16. However... I tend to think that the likeliest scenario is; we keep ourselves within touching distance to the leading pack until January with a stable second place finish in the CL group. Last season we had Azpilicueta, Cahill, Luiz, Moses, Alonso, Kante, Matic, Fabregas, Hazard, Pedro, Willian, Costa and to a certain degree Zouma, Ake, Chalobah as some sort of option at some stage of the season (not counting the first 5-6 games). This season that list should read as Azpilicueta, Cahill, Luiz, Rudiger, Christensen, Moses, Alonso, Zappacosta, Kante, Bakayoko, Fabregas, Drinkwater, Willian, Hazard, Pedro, Morata, Batshuayi. 17 vs 12, 12.5. That's five more usable players (although two are CBs). That might be enough to carry us until January. But it is very, very light indeed. Had we not gotten that number to 17, but remained on 15, then I'd have shared your worst case scenario as the likeliest outcome. Add two more in January and that number is 19 (minus long-term injuries) for the second half of the season. It's not as bad as I thought. I think we can make a long list of players we, based on their quality, could potentially have kept. In no order of preference; Matic, Solanke, Atsu, Cuadrado, Traore, Ake, Chalobah, Remy, Pasalic, Abraham, Palmer, Aina, Loftus-Cheek, Piazon, Van Ginkel, Zouma, Brown, Kalas, Baker, and Boga to name most (I think). I can't see how we didn't find 2-3 of that lot being able to fill a squad role.

I assume you agree with me that the **** up was to let too many of the usable players go, and not that we didn't buy enough (6 new players is quite substantial I'd have thought). But a **** up nonetheless - yes.

That's just media-fabricated bullshit. 1. It's the Daily Star 2. The media story all summer has been that Conte isn't happy 3. That's the first question he'll get during the Leicester presser and his reply will be "I'm happy with the squad and ready to work with these players". 4. To keep this story to run further, the media will need to find a senior figure who won't talk to the media - step forward Roman A. 5. This way, they have the "Chelsea crisis" narrative done for the season. Edit: to clarify, it wasn't the strategy to bring in players that backfired, it was that we sold/released too many players. For us to bring in 8+ players or to have a net spend of £150m was never going to happen (despite your insistence we would). The £80m net spend we had this summer isn't on par with Man C or Man U, but it's on par with City's 10 year average and £50m more than our 10 year average.
  4. Media / Press

Yeah there's nothing wrong with the players we did sign. More a case of we could have used another 2-3. I saw a quite somewhere (probably from Matt Law) stating that Conte wanted 8 but only got 6. It would have been a big difference between 17 (+Kenedy) or 19 without the need for Kenedy.
  5. Transfer Talk Topic

I think we are three good quality players away from a really good squad. Exactly in the positions you mentioned.
  6. Squad Status: 2020/21 Season

Not sure where Emenalo is. The coach I believe was on a small vacation.

    1. Thanks. Another way to look at it is; Arsenal(24): Debuchy, Mertesacker, Holding, Mustafi, Coquelin, Elneny, Walcott, Lacazette, Giroud, Chambers, Wilshere, Cazorla, Iwobi, Akpom Liverpool (23): Alexander-Arnold, Klavan, Robertson, Milner, Can, Grujic, Oxlade-Chamberlain, Sturridge, Lallana, Clyne, Flanagan, Markovic, Ings Man C (18): Danilo, Mangala, Otamendi, Delph, Toure, Gundogan, Sane, Jesus Man U (22): Darmian, Lindelöf, Rojo, Shaw, Herrera, Fellaini, Lingard, Zlatan, Martial, Smalling, Carrick, Young Tottenham (21): Trippier, Sanchez, Foyth, Davies, Wanyama, Winks, Lamela, Sissoko, N'Koudou, Llorente, Janssen Chelsea (18): Rudiger, Christensen, Zappacosta, Drinkwater, Fabregas, Batshuayi, Willian, Kenedy City probably has the highest average quality/player, but seriously lack depth as well. Although their 12-18 outfielders are stronger than ours (just). Really surprised to see this, didn't realise they were so weak. United looking really strong. As does Arsenal and Liverpool. One is dragged down by the negative energy surrounding their manager, the other strongly on the up. If I was asked to predict how the league would end up between the top six judging by their squads and managers, I'd say; 1. Man U 2. Liverpool 3. Tottenham 4. Man C 5. Chelsea 6. Arsenal (solely due to Wenger) 2. Yes, and yes.
  8. Transfer Talk Topic

Yes that is a huge worry. Pedro, Hazard, Willian, Morata and Bats will have to be involved every game, either as a starter or as a very likely sub. We better hope Musonda is seen as a proper squad option and that he miraculously will have a massive break-out season. My gosh. That hits the spot. Couldn't have said it any better myself. You could do the same for the top six. Arsenal: Ospina, Debuchy, Mertesacker, Holding, Mustafi, LWB, Coquelin, Elneny, Walcott, Lacazette, Giroud Players 23-31: Chambers, Wilshere, Reine-Adelaide, Cazorla, Maitland-Niles, Iwobi, Akpom, Nelson Liverpool: Karius, Alexander-Arnold, Klavan, CB, Robertson, Milner, Can, Grujic, Oxlade-Chamberlain, Sturridge, Lallana Players 23-30: Clyne, Flanagan, Ejaria, Markovic, Wilson, Solanke, Woodburn, Ings Man C: Bravo, Danilo, Mangala, Otamendi, LB, Delph, Toure, Gundogan, Sane, Jesus, Zinchenko Players 23-25: Adarabioyo, Foden, Diaz Man U: Romero, Darmian, Lindelöf, Rojo, Shaw, Herrera, Fellaini, Lingard, Zlatan, Martial Players 23-26: Tuanzebe, Smalling, Carrick, Young Tottenham: Vorm, Trippier, Sanchez, Foyth, Davies, Wanyama, Winks, Lamela, Sissoko, N'Koudou, Llorente Players 23-24: Walker-Peters, Janssen Chelsea: Caballero, Rudiger, Christensen, Clarke-Salter, Zappacosta, Drinkwater, Fabregas, Kenedy, Musonda Jr., Batshuayi, Willian Basically what Juni says below. It's not about buying players and plant them in the bench. Conte's supposed to use the players. A LWB, AM and another S and we would have been home.

Why is it that as soon as someone who sees themselves as a bit of an expert and disagrees with someone the FIFA/FM comparisons comes out? I'm 37 and haven't played either in a good 15 years. I agree with Dingus - we've messed up this window and the squad size. What are you supposed to ridicule me with? Interesting perspective. There is certainly a case to be made that Conte is somewhat to blame at least. Jose used to get absolutely hammered for having his favourites. Conte has taken that to a new whole level unfortunately. You are being ridiculous and you know it.
  10. Transfer Talk Topic

Am I missing something here? Don't we have Aina on loan at Hull already? isn't there a limit of one player?
  11. Transfer Talk Topic

So, best case squad right now is: Courtois, Caballero, Eduardo Azpilicueta, Luiz, Cahill, Rudiger, Christensen Moses, Zappacosta, Alonso Kante, Bakayoko, Fabregas, Drinkwater Hazard, Pedro, Willian Morata, Bats 17 seniors for 10 starting positions and 6 subs for potentially 60 games... The ****.
  12. Transfer Talk Topic

What are you saying? Conte demanded all those youngsters to be sent out on loan? Not a big change of strategy to be perfectly honest.
  13. Transfer Talk Topic

Cech, Turnbull, Hilario Ivanovic, Bosingwa, Ferreira, Belletti, Terry, Carvalho, Alex, Cole Essien, Lampard, Ballack, Deco, Mikel, Zhirkov Cole, Malouda, Anelka, Kalou Drogba, Shevchenko, Sturridge No comparison. U-21's as fillers? Matic, Hutchinson, Bruma, Kakuta, Borini, Van Aanholt
  14. Transfer Talk Topic

What have I been saying all summer? We've had an average net spend of £30m over the last ten seasons. It was clear we wouldn't go on and end up having a net spend of £150m all of a sudden. We needed it, but we've needed it before as well.
  15. Transfer Talk Topic

Little over four hours to go. Gone awfully quiet hasn't it?
  16. Transfer Talk Topic

Thx. Well I'm obviously hoping this lad won't find himself out of depth, and that he'll add an extra usable body as competition for an existing player that really ran on fumes end of last season. We were in dire need to add a player there. If he can also be cover as LWB, then maybe he's a two birds with one stone kind of thing. So if that's the case, and we end up signing Drinkwater and Mahrez we might just about get away with it until January. Courtois, Caballero, Eduardo; Azpilicueta, Luiz, Cahill, Rudiger, Christensen; Moses, Zappacosta, Alonso; Kante, Bakayoko, Fabregas, Drinkwater; Hazard, Pedro, Willian, Mahrez; Morata, Batshuayi 18 senior outfielders. Add one or two in January and we might have done enough for the season.
  17. Transfer Talk Topic

James, as far as I'm aware, there is no requirement to register 25 players for the squad. We can't be fined either. Essentially we could have had 17 foreigners and that was our squad with a few U-21's thrown in. At this rate, it wouldn't make a difference to us anyways. We hardly have 17 players to register! I wasn't aware he'd be off for so long. £30m sounds excessive considering we can sign him in July for free (but with a hefty signing-on no doubt). I suppose the difference in real fee between now and then isn't the full £30m. Don't ask any fellow Chelsea fan questions about a new player you weren't familiar with. Got it. Won't happen again good sir.
  18. Transfer Talk Topic

Don't want to be grumpy, but can Zappacosta also operate at LWB? If not, it seems slightly strange that we'd buy a RWB considering we already had Moses and Azpi as potential cover. Has anyone actually seen much of this Zappacosta fella? Until an hour ago I'd never even heard of him.
  19. Transfer Talk Topic

    1. It should be clear to you, especially since Chalobah himself has said that's why he left. There's no room, or need, to speculate. 2. How do you know? What we do know is that Lukaku asked to leave because he wanted to be an automatic starter. He stated this at the time, Mourinho confirmed and when Lukaku signed for Man U he even stated it was his 'fault' for leaving Chelsea. KDB was the same. Both were involved with the first team, KDB even started the season as a starter until he deservedly played himself out of the starting XI. There really isn't much room for interpretation here, but you and others continue do on this subject. What's perfectly clear though is that we won't succeed in building a squad that we have to go out and buy. So I guess the only alternative is to get a coach who wants to play youngsters and is allowed the time needed to do so by Roman. For the last decade the strategy has been to not back our manager in the market while demanding the same from him as Barca or Real would do from their manager. Its a huge mismatch between the resources made available and the demands we place on the manager. That's why we sack a manager every 18 months. Huh? It's clearly over the top to expect the champions of England to have a similar squad size to our competitors? Us having 20 usable outfield players would still be one of the smallest squads among the top six. It's absolutely not over the top to expect us to at least have a reasonable squad. If others can, then surely we should be able to as well. The problem is that eve left it so late (as per usual) while we've happily got rid of at least 10 players that could easily have played a role for us. It's a **** up of epic proportions. It seems the club think that 2015/16 was a perfect storm and that it can't happen again. I wouldn't bet on it.
  20. Transfer Talk Topic

Or he'd rather be taken seriously as a player and was reluctant to be sent out on a completely pointless loan at this stage? How Pogba is a comparable situation isn't very clear to me though. Unless they sold a player just as good as Pogba for £5m and bought Pogba as that players replacement of course. Who did they sell? We certainly aren't bad at closing deals. As long as it decimates our squad we seem quite enthusiastic.
  21. Transfer Talk Topic

Yes. But surely Nat is good enough to be our fourth choice CM with serious minutes as he's good enough to be starting for a mid-table PL side? Afterall, we are about to buy the third CM option from another mid-table side for almost ten times the fee we sold Nat for... Only at Chelsea does **** like that happen.
  22. Transfer Talk Topic

Then it's rather odd to claim that we sold Nat because he wanted to leave due to more playing time or that he didn't want to be a squad player. You wrote: Just like him leaving. He isn't better any of the options we have, and he didn't want to remain here as a squad player. He was never going to be a regular first team player and this was possible at Watford. But that's okay, bend the truth to suit your agenda. So I guess you want to retract the bit above then and perhaps also the accusation of me having some devious agenda for claiming Nat left because and of how the club handled his situation.
  23. Transfer Talk Topic

Lukaku had an option to stay and be part of the squad. De Bruyne the same. They asked to leave against Jose's wishes. Everyone concerned has confirmed that was the case. You can't have read my thoughts on Roman very well then. I often point my finger at Roman. In fact, it seems I'm one of the very few who does that and I've been doing it since 2009 or thereabouts. But they weren't put in the same place. They were part of the squad and all saw minutes in the limited time they were here. They weren't told they'd be sent out on loan. Thats a rather big difference. We didn't even want Chalobah in this years squad so how is the situations comparable? I get the feeling from reading your posts that maybe things aren't as rosy as we'd like to believe behind the scenes? Would be interesting to hear more... Emenalo is certainly helping out with some of the areas an old-school manager would have. Agreed. I can't remember a window when we handled things worse than what we've done so far. I'll admit, that made me laugh. What can I say James, it's a tough crowd. Perhaps Conte isn't as liked as we thought? I admit that I thought Conte was well liked, but what if he isn't? Yes. The transfer market is a tougher market than what people may expect. But we are the only side that has 15 outfield players. So I'll continue to pretend we are a bit atypical if that's alright with you. In general yes, English clubs are not doing a very good job in the marketplace. It is clear there is something that isn't working as it should within the club. What agenda would that be? Perhaps you should reconsider calling out people for an alleged agenda considering you 'forgot' to mention the real reason Chalobah left. We wanted to send him out on another loan! Now... How is it possible you forgot to mention that? Maybe watch out with the accusations of having an agenda mate. Quite.
  24. Transfer Talk Topic

Basically what Zoowraa says below. Chalobah should never have left for Nottingham Forrest. That was a mad decision. Not playing him more last season is even worse but the prize surely has to go to whatever idiot decided we should loan him out this summer.
  25. Transfer Talk Topic

I just don't get why you talk so much about you as a persona. If you need counselling there are other ways James. How many times over the last three seasons have we seen Wenger play Ox, Ox performing brilliantly only to be benched for the next game? I don't have enough fingers and toes. I think there might be a different reason to be frank. But it's hard for some to accept it judging by what some have said about JM in the past, and what that would actually mean for Conte. Priceless stuff MT. They've all been replacements to an already non-existing squad. No idea what you think you're demonstrating here. Successful window? It's been a disaster from start to finish. This. If I hear another "Conte expert" claiming he gives youth a chance I think I'll explode. It's bs of the highest order. I can't remember a Chelsea manager who was less interested in playing youngsters than Conte is. If I were Christensen I'd hand in a transfer request asap. Err... Try again mate. We sold Chalobah because Conte had no interest in playing him or even keeping him around the squad. Conte basically forced him out. Shameful. The time for panic was end of June, early July. Now it's time to prepare those P45s.
