Are you seriously asking me to describe why this has been handled badly? Ok how about this, if Costa was told he could leave in January how is it possible we find ourselves in this situation? Costa doesn't have a new club, he's in Brazil and giving interviews that makes our club look like its run by a bunch of clowns. If Costa wasn't told he would be let go in January, but told via text message in June. Don't think I have to explain why that scenario would be bad.
  2. Squad Status: 2020/21 Season

    1. There's absolutely no indication that either Chalobah or Ake demanded guaranteed playing time. I think this is just the easy way out to accept them leaving. I maintain, and I think Juni would agree, had we managed them better both would still be here. 2. I have no idea why you would have thought that. It's been a very badly kept secret that Matic was about to leave. We knew this last summer probably when Conte had to convince Matic to stay one more season. This is not a case of us being caught in the wrong foot, we took an active decision to offer a contract to Chalobah and then loaning him out again despite knowing Matic was on his way. That much should be crystal I'd have thought. 3. Good. So Conte isn't this magical manager who gives youth a chance left right and centre. Good to have this established.

There's a lot of different scenarios one can draw up for both sides. I'll state this again, bottom-line is that none of us know. What we do know, is that this has been managed horribly bad either case.

    1. Sure. 2. Absolutely not. If the club has done something wrong than they have done something wrong. Evagate is a nice reminder to some members on here. How did you act during that time? Which side did you take then? The clubs or Eva's? 3. No bigger IF then the alternative. None of us can know for sure - that's my point. 4. Maybe they haven't had months and months to take this to court? If Costa was told in June over an sms it would be hard to take the club to court in January. I don't think this will go to court either, but no matter what Conte has ****ed up monumentally and shaved off at least £25m off any fee we could have gotten for Costa. Worst case scenario we may have to let him go for free.
  5. Squad Status: 2020/21 Season

I'm sorry but that wiewpoint in itself defeats any argument to have more than 11 outfield players. It's a squad game these days (even Claudio Ranieri said this back in 2002) and it hasn't changed. It's not enough to have 11 players good enough to be starting, you need 20 players who are all good enough to be starting some games. Those four are, without discussion, good enough to be starting for us in any competition and do it without making us materially weaker.

Seems like the board has done nothing but sitting around 'pleasing' themselves all summer. How we can make such a small profit despite not spending much on players for a decade now is mind-blowing. The exceptional costs could have been higher had José not declined his pay-out... Too bad the club didn't follow his instructions to re-invest it in the team. Sure, no one in their right mind can question how important Costa has been to us. It's a shame the situation has been allowed to escalate like this. Not sure it is that easy to be honest. Having thoight about this for a while, yes Costa is a man child, yes he's repeatedly said he wants to go back to A Madrid, yes he can be a liability, but he was a damn good striker and scored a **** load of goals for us. Who's responsible for this isn't a very clear-cut choice. Backing the club is certainly one way to go, but that doesn't mean the club is in the right on this one. If Costa is telling anything that resembles the truth, then what Conte has done is inexcusable and Costa has a very good reason to be upset. If this goes to court, I'd imagine that the club has to show material proof that Costa asked to leave and that the club granted that wish back in January. If we can't do that, I can't see how we can come out of this with any sort of dignity.

After having read that, I'm starting to think the truth may not be as clear cut as I first thought... First of all, if Conte had indeed clearly stated that Costa would be allowed to leave, one would have thought that his agent would have made sure a deal was on the table long before the new season started... Secondly, it seems from having read that, that there was never a serious option to go to China. Thirdly, it seems that Conte may have based his decision to not wanting Costa on an 'incident where Costa didn't behave in the best way' - apparently being that training ground bust-up. It is also worrying to read that as a coach he sees him as a great one, but that as a person he isn't as charming and perhaps being a little bit too much of an 'italian'... Considering that we don't have a squad, a player like Costa would have been worth his weight in gold right now. Couple that with Matic being sent packing (massive mistake imo) and Ake and Chalobah being sold, that's four more than able squad players right there. Add RLC and it's almost criminal how we have let this happen. Imagine we could have been in a situation where we 'only' needed another two wing backs to be done with the squad? GK: Courtois, Caballero, Eduardo CB: Azpilicueta, Luiz, Cahill, Rudiger, Christensen, Ake RWB: Moses, New RWB LWB: Alonso, New LWB CM: Kanté, Bakayoko, Matic, Fabregas, Chalobah AM: Hazard, Pedro, Willian, Loftus-Cheek, Musonda S: Morata, Costa, Bats That would have been a proper squad and far from unrealistic... Yet we find ourselves in this situation. Hard to grasp how we can be so incompetent really.

I'd wait with the laughing bit for a while if I were you...
  9. Squad Status: 2020/21 Season

    1. I don't think anyone expects a conveyor belt of young players coming through. But I think we are a few who expects a handful of players in the last decade to make the grade. Given the resources we're plowing down the academy/development squad I really don't think that's asking too much... 2. It would have been hard for Chalobah to make a material difference anyhow, seeing as he was going to be sent out on loan anyways. I can certainly understand why he was hesitant to sign a new contract given that the last three loans he was sent out on was a waste of everyones time. Like you say, he was good enough to play a part. Perhaps if Conte had told him when he got back from internationals in the summer that "you'll be an important squad player for us and here's a new contract to reflect that" instead of "here's a new contract for you to sign and then we'll send you out on yet another loan", Chalobah's answer might have been slightly different. 3. There's definitely a lot we as a club can do to take care of the young players we develop who clearly are good enough to play PL football. Experience comes with chances and we have seen enough **** senior players being bought for hundreds of millions of pounds over the years where a youth product would have made far more sense. The latest in that list being Ake, Chalobah, Solanke and Loftus-Cheek. Those four, together with Christensen, should really have been part of the proper squad had we as a club managed the situation properly. I also think it is extremely exaggerated to claim that all of these players demanded first team football. Yes, probably thinking they were good enough to be properly involved, but I seriously doubt any of those demanded a starting berth. If we can manage them better and incorporate them in a better way when they clearly are good enough, perhaps they would be a lot liklier to want to stay... I was also under the impression that Conte wanted to give youth a chance. That has proved to be an absolute mockery so far, I'm hard pressed to remember any manager less willing to give youth a chance.

Hopefully we can do a lot better this time around. Lord knows we will have to do a lot better than Luiz and Alonso on the final day. That won't be enough this time. Yes but the mistake of waiting too long will continue to cost us until the new (if any) players have time to settle in and learn our system and tactics. Just because they've had a full pre-season elsewhere doesn't mean they'll be able to just slot right into our starting XI and play a blinder. No surprise really. Criminally underrated while he was here. What is it they say? You won't notice what you had until it's gone? I haven't even watched the Man U game but feel fairly comfortable most people will talk about him being a success at United. He's that good. Quite.
  11. Transfer Talk Topic

Great. Will take a lot more than that for us to have a good season this time around. We need at least four players good enough to challenge for the starting XI. This transfer window is already deemed an absolute disaster. Nothing will change that. Even if we get four quality players in before Sep 1 we'll be in late October before they can be expected to make a reasonable difference. By then it might be well too late.
  12. Squad Status: 2020/21 Season

Sure - not disputing that many of these players have faults. But it's also only a list of players who've been loaned out. Chalobah, Ake and Matic would all be serious squad players for us. Ditto RLC and Abraham had they stayed. But the fact that so many of these players James listed aren't up to scratch opens up a whole different can of worms... Like what the f are we doing? Why are we trading and loaning out these players and not focus on making the first team as strong as it can be? Why are we, seemingly, spending more resources on making the development squad tick with ins and outs than we do with the first team? Sounds to me we need to get our priorities straight. Start with sacking Michael "palpable discord" Emenalo. Follow that up with kicking out Marina who seems to be nothing more than a glorified assistant. Might come off harsh, but the buck stops with those two really. They are the ones who are responsible for player recruitment and transfer dealings and making sure our coach has a squad to work with. Never mind discussing the quality of our squad options. We don't even have a squad!!!
  13. Transfer Talk Topic

No wonder he left. So there we have it, it wasn't because he demanded to be a firsts choice (like KDB/Lukaku), it's because he couldn't muster another pointless seventh loan. Talk about us ****ing it up big time. Inexcusable! And we only got £5m for him!!! Madness! It's been known for a while that the previous owner would sell. I knew the couple quite well and they've been looking to sell for a few years. Only half-decent pub left in the area (also like the Atlas if it's still around). The area around the Bridge is dead these days. The only one who regularly insults and try to score ridiculous internet points in here is you James. Maybe elig you stopped insulting everyone life would be easier for you? Just a friendly tip. And no, I'm not attempting to bully you right now.
  14. Transfer Talk Topic

I was under the impression he's a RB/RWB. Certainly seems that way from this... anyhow - seems like a very good player. Technical, pacey, drive. Much like Morata, Bakayoko, Rudiger (to some extent). It's pretty easy to see where Antonio wants to go with this. I like it. I hope these rumours are true. Seems like a promising player. Anyone know this lad better? Thoughts?
  15. Transfer Talk Topic

Come on Pete, feels like you're splitting hairs. Yes we've replaced players but we've also lost an awful lot who haven't been replaced - Mikel, Terry, Oscar, Ivan etc. Just because they weren't deemed usable doesn't mean the squad as is, is anywhere near deep enough. We've got 14 senior outfield players. That's the lowest number we've ever entered a season with. If this is our final squad we've got to drop two competitions to have any chance of making top four.
  16. Transfer Talk Topic

I think Solanke may surprise a few people this season. I wouldn't disagree with this, but why aren't we using that strategy now? We have had a handful of players that we could have done that with. Instead we've bought squad cover at high prices. Makes no sense. Er what? Chalobah has been an automatic starter for Watford in the Championship. He was selected in the Championship Team of the Year at 19... Which basically shows how important it is to send players out on loan and then give them a chance here after they have excelled. Every loan after the Watford one was a mistake and failure. The Napoli one downright bizarre.
  17. Transfer Talk Topic

True, he'd been a great squad option but he wanted/demanded more too soon. I wonder what Conte could have done with him?
  18. Transfer Talk Topic

The young players I feel got away (and that was brought through the academy in some form) is Solanke, Ake, Bertrand and Chalobah. I reckon all four could have played some part for squad depth. We could have saved £30m+ on Rudiger and maybe gone for a top class CB instead. Chalobah would have been a perfect CM4. Bertrand great rotation and perhaps first choice option. Ake 6th choice CB, cover at LWB and CM. Solanke 3rd choice striker. GK: Courtois, Caballero, Eduardo CB: New CB, Luiz, Azpilicueta, Cahill, Christensen, Ake RWB: New RWB, Moses, (Azpilicueta), (Pedro) LWB: Alonso, Bertrand, (Ake), (Pedro) CM: Kante, Bakayoko, Fabregas, Chalobah, (Ake), Baker AM: Hazard, Pedro, New AM, Willian, Musonda Jr., (Fabregas), (Moses), (Baker) S: Morata, Batshuayi, Solanke, (Hazard) Plenty of cover all over the pitch, quite a young side with some more experienced heads. Of course the unfurled positions would be top class players or young established players with unearthed potential. 20 senior outfielders, three keepers and Baker, Musonda Jr. and Solanke as young squad options. That squad only really lacks a world class striker.
  19. Transfer Talk Topic

Sure - but he's still more of an immobile #10 than an inside forward. He doesn't have the speed, dribbling skill or intensity of Willian, Pedro or Hazard. Still a great shot and crosser. Has real passing ability too. I think his perfect role is what Mata did for us in the hole 2012. He needs to have the side built around him but I don't think he's good enough for that. After going to City he's made a habit of playing well against the lesser sides (he's limitations aren't as critical) while not really stepping it up consistently imo. He's a good player yes, but I don't think he's a great one. I'm not blaming City's inability to win the league on him, but the defensive solidity and robustness isn't helped when you add a weak core to the mix. I don't miss him at all. But I accept I'm in a minority on this one.

Where would De Bruyne play? RW or LW? He doesn't have the pace or ability to press I'm afraid. He's a luxury we can do without just fine. Much rather Pedro, Willian or Hazard in those positions and he can't play as a CM in a midfield two either... He also seems rather lazy and has very high thoughts of himself. He's just fine where he is.

I'd be up for some of that...

That would be a real problem for SkySports... How would they deal with that?
  23. Transfer Talk Topic

Oh we are definitely on the same side when it comes to this one zaffo. What I'm trying to express, is a worry that Conte is on his way and that the club won't change their ways. Seemingly that's where we are heading. Conte doesn't look too impressed, we have a history of not backing title winning managers (not once or twice - but three times) and the squad is non-existent at this point in time. This would be the third disappointing window in a row for me (and I believe for Conte as well). Yes there's still four weeks to go. But we are short all over the shop. Time is running out.

You know it's desperate times when the headline says "Drinkwater emerges as Chelseas top target"...
  25. Transfer Talk Topic

Well I suppose we can't be sure either way. What I'd oppose to, is that both Mohrinho and both players (KDB, RL) stated that Jose did not want them to leave but that they insisted. True enough that may have been because they weren't sure they'd be able to fight themselves back into the fore. But when all involved parties tell the same story I'd have thought that's the most likely scenario. Fair enough. He did say that - I stand corrected although it changes little to my overall point.
