Did quite well but I wouldn't expect anything less. Early days and only time will tell...
  2. Didier Drogba

quote:Originally posted by Gary StoneAnyone know what happened to him after he blazed over before his goal? He reacted to someone in the crowd and went back to them after he scored. id="quote"> id="quote">Gary, I sat in row K in the MHL stand which is a few rows from where he was abused. After he kicked the shot wild into the stands, some bloke swore at him and Drogba foolishly went over to have a word with the fella instead of walking away. After being told to go back and play football, he walked away and SPAT in the process. Eidur then signalled to him not to spit in that manner. Curiously, when he scored, he went back to the SAME fella and showed off the lucky goal. JT was rejoicing but never understood that Drogba was trying to have a last laugh. I think the stewards stepped in and it seems to be history...

quote:Originally posted by gronkjaer77The reporter in that article failed to pick up a parallel in the whole Makelele saga of 2 years ago. He felt he was being underpaid after 2? seasons at Madrid, and threatened to go on strike if not given a pay hike in line with the Galacticos. Madrid couldn't sort it out and sold him to us at the 11th hour. A incident that benefitted us stupendously but illustrates that players motivation to come to Chelsea can be fairly questioned. Makelele freely admits that the main reason he came to Chelsea was for the money, and I think a lot more of him for admitting that. Now he's been here for 2 years and has won trophies and experienced heartbreak with the club he has quite literally become one of 'us.' Essien is however a different kettle of fish. He has been widely quoted in the past as saying his facourite teams in England are Manchester Utd and Arsenal (note NO mention of the Blues,) so WHY when Chelsea express an interest does he change his tune and declare he REALLY REALLY wants to come to West London more than anything else in the whole world. He feels like he is already a part of Chelsea apparently. He thinks we are one of Europe's biggest clubs. Flattering that last statement isn't it? Are we one of Europe's biggest clubs? If we are then we have only just got there, as previous to last season we had only played in the Champions League twice (albeit reached QF and SF on those occasions.) Hardly Real Madrid's History is it? Now I love the Chels as much as the next man on this forum, but I regard the signing of Essien with suspicion. Now he is coming I shall let him do his talking on the field of play and if he ultimately takes a Maka tack then best of luck to him and I shall embrace him (not literally.) I just can't get the niggling doubt out of my mind that Essien, despite obviously being a player of talent (who isn't at this level,) is not the MAN Maka is and we won't see any similar admissions from him. The truth is he could have stayed at Lyon and been at the World Cup (if Ghana qualify) regardless. Why Chelsea above all others? Money is the reality of football now. I just wish there was more honesty and humility involved as well. I appreciate my views will be shot down by some, respected by others. The simple fact is I'm just having my say. Thanks for listening The best crosser in the game, G. id="quote"> id="quote">Great post Gronkjaer77! Surprised that I only just saw it... See you tomorrow for a pint before the game buddy by 2pm.

Look at it from another position....he was 7 mil cheaper and younger than Stevie G! He was 3 mil cheaper than Rio and he was less than some Italian teams pay for a goalkeeper! id="quote"> id="quote"> How about that we paid £11m for Lampard and £24.4m for Essien? How about Lampard having played Premiership football already? Lampard has gone on to be one of, if not the best midfielder in the world at the moment and is realistically worth perhaps £35m? All this has taken 4 seasons, right? So in 4 seasons should we see Essien be worth £70m? No, of course not. Because he is simply not good enough. As I have said in a previous thread, from what I have seen of Essien it just hasnt impressed me. £7m cheaper and younger than Steven Gerrard he may be, but he wants to have a season comparable in quality to the Liverpool skipper or else he will be deemed by me, and no doubt others on here, as quite an expensive flop. At this price he has to hit the ground running. If he does, fair enough and I will pitch up and say I was wrong. I'm not too worried about that speech at the moment though. Oh, and a point that might be of some interest to you. Ronaldinho only cost Barcelona £23m. Who would you rather have? JM has pursued just 2 central midfielders in the time that he as been at Chelsea. Gerrard was identified a year ago and then another bid this summer. Essien has been linked for at least 3 months in the press. In all that time, are you seriously telling me that JM and whoever else at Chelsea could not have found another player to come into Chelsea to bring playing value to the squad at a fraction of the cost?? This is one thing that I am in complete agreement with basole on. £24.4m for Essien? Think of the players out there, Kaka, Xavi, Aimar..... Are you telling me there are no other options? Pish id="quote"> id="quote">Hughjars99, you are a wise dude and forever will be with me in paradise! I wonder what spectacles others are wearing concerning Essien. I mean, having watched this guy no less than SEVEN times, I keep wondering what all the fuss is about him! Riquelme who is a very skillful and productive player cost Villareal ONLY £5m. Enough said...

  6. Didier Drogba

quote:Originally posted by 321TedRogersI watched France play against the ivory Coast and Drogba volleyed an amazing effort towards the top corner that drew an excellent save from coupet. His technique and touch were amazing and had it gone in, I doubt I'd have seen a better goal all season. I'm bored to death of Drogba discussion now. id="quote"> id="quote">You're the man! I watched the game as well and what a volley that was? He also missed a close header but was very impressive all round and the commentators said that. Why people like Bazza cannot let it rest is beyond me but when me or basole mention Tiago, he gets upset and starts his professional profanities. I love Crespo but Drogba is also great for us. Anyone who cannot see that like Claude4 says, should have a word with themselves and commune with reality. You cannot be rubbish or a donkey and muster 16 goals in a season with 8 weeks on the sidelines and all the pressurised expectations...

I noted the posts and deleted both yours and David80's posts on the subject. Both posts were abusive and so both got deleted. I apologise that the "racist" comment got through. I do not know if it was me or another moderator, we try our best but we are by no means perfect. When I saw your response I deleted it as it was also not appropriate. Then I went back and deleted his post and any post that had 'copied' the original post. id="quote"> id="quote">Thanks a lot Robin and I must admit that my response to the post was in anger, awful and very unlike me but at times, there is a limit to the abuse that you can take. I feel satisfied with your answer and appreciate why my abusive response was deleted. Come on the Chels!

Worst news of the day! Now the real player mutiny begins and I EXPECT Tiago to leave and play elsewhere. This is the nonsense about JM that I don't like. Buying players and not even giving some of them enough chances to prove themselves. Tiago wasn't even on the bench yesterday! What will Essien actually bring to Chelsea? Nothing but physical force! TOTAL RUBBISH!!!

When we choose to like one player better than another we naturally develop a bias. You obviously have a bias towards Crespo. I think Crespo is a better striker than Drogba but I'm trying to remain open minded on the subject because they are both talented. Drogba proved what he is capable of last Sunday, I just hope he can produce more performances like that on a more regular basis. id="quote"> id="quote"> Yes Sir! I may have some bias towards Crespo but it is solely based on his exploits at all levels of football. From Parma to Lazio to Inter Milan to Chelsea and to Ac Milan, the guy is one of the most quality finishers in the world. Unfortunately, Drogba isn't and is yet to prove himself on a big stage compared to Crespo. I like Drogba still but Crespo is clearly a better striker in IMO... id="quote"> id="quote"> You are right, Drogba is still unproven. He plays for an inferior national team compared to Argentina so chances are they will never have a chance to win the WC. Having said that. I will restate what I said. I am not saying Crespo is bad, nor am I saying that Drogba is better. All I am saying is that Crespo has yet to have a good season in the English league. He scored a few nice goals and you will be quick to point out that his goals to minutes ratio is second to none. I just can't help but feel that he is not suited for the English game. I think Drogba is more suited. Crespo has had a great career in Argentina and Italy where scoring is not easier but the teams play to his strengths, ie a goal poacher. As Dan Murhy stated in his article, the days of goal poachers are numbered in the English game and sadly Crespo is a goal poacher. I think we will see a great Crespo in the champions league where every chance matters and he will be great at finishing off the easiet and most difficult of chances but I don't think he will shine in the Premiership. I might opt for using Drogba for the premiership and Crespo for the champions league and mixing it up a little depending on opposition and results. I really hope both strikers come good and at the end of the season we will be arguing who was the great one as both were amazing throughout the season. Again I know Crespo is good but I have yet to be convinced he will be good for Chelsea. I hope you can accept that even with your love for him. PS Guddy is my favorite player but I am not saying he is a better striker than Crespo. id="quote"> id="quote">No worries but I feel it is very very very early days so far. Lampard did not have a great pre-season but will soon kick off. Just time is needed and we can analyse things at the end of the season as Crespo said in one of his interviews. Please give Crespo time and support for the sake of CFC!

quote:Originally posted by Abdel Munem Aminpersonally I don't yet rate Crespo. Everyone says he is our missing piece in the jigsaw but I have yet to be convinced. I am more or less convinced by Drogba even if people still say he is underperforming but Crespo has yet to score any goals for us if I am not mistaken. I don't think Crespo is made for the premiership to tell you the truth. Time will tell... id="quote"> id="quote">Well, if you don't rate Crespo because Drogba scored 2 goals against Arsenal last weekend when Crespo was frustrated by terrible off-side calls, then I think you are biased. Reading further to your last post confirmed it when you said you are in love with Eidur. I think the objective side of the story is that Crespo has just returned and scored some stunning goals for us in his first season. It is very early days to banish Crespo to second position especially when I remember Didier's hit and miss sessions last season. While Crespo has proved himself as a potent and lethal striker, Eidur is yet to do so. If he was that good like you always put it, how come he is being drafted into the middle as a last resort? Why the bias against Crespo? How come Drogba is now seen as the messiah to some? Has Robben started his majestic runs yet? I stand my Crespo being the number striker as he is the most intelligent, most experienced and most clinical of the three. Go Crespo!
