Christensen seems the least suited to the PL and the most likely to attract a decent fee, but I think that other areas are more pressing. Number 1 has to be making us less easy to play through and this hopefully means a proper defensive midfielder and a fit Kante. Then some pace at left back and a confident keeper would make a massive difference. All of our CBs have looked like world beaters at some point during the season, then Championship players at other times. I think they are a symptom of our issues, not a cause.

    I'd be happy with a squad like this: GK: Onana/Caballero/Foster RB: Azpilicueta/James CB: Rüdiger/Tomori/Zouma/Christensen LB: Chilwell/Alonso DM/No.4: Rice/Gilmour B2B/No.6: Kanté/Kovacic AM/No.8: Mount/Loftus-Cheek RW: Ziyech/Havertz LW: Pulisic/Hudson-Odoi ST: Werner/Abraham/Giroud New loans for Ampadu and Gallagher.
  3. Bayern Munich vs Chelsea

From UEFA: Can clubs register new players? Yes, teams can register a maximum of three new 'List A' players. But there are a couple of caveats: Each squad is still limited to 25 List A players (players can be removed to make room); Players must have been already registered and eligible to play for the club at domestic level since 3 February. https://www.uefa.com/uefachampionsleague/news/025f-0fd4721b794e-bfa28091239f-1000--changes-for-this-season/?iv=true What is List B? A player may be registered on List B if he is born on, or after, 1 January 1998 and has been eligible to play for the club concerned for any uninterrupted period of two years since his 15th birthday (players aged 16 may be submitted if they have been registered with the club for the previous two years). Clubs are entitled to register an unlimited number of players on List B during the season, but the list must be submitted by no later than 24:00CET the day before a match.

To add to the disruption, the first PL matches come immediately after an international break - England play Iceland on 5 September, Denmark on 8 September. Imagine having only 2/3 days to prepare your team for the first match of the season! League Cup only makes sense for teams not qualified for Europe, now and in the future.
  5. Bayern Munich vs Chelsea

I think we can also, in theory, register players that are now back from loan - if any of them are actually at Cobham and in shape.
  6. Bayern Munich vs Chelsea

Caballero James Rüdiger Zouma Emerson Kante Kovacic Willian Mount Hudson-Odoi Giroud Subs: Arrizabalaga, Tomori, Christensen, Barkley, Bate, Loftus-Cheek, Abraham, Batshuayi, Broja If any of the above are still injured we're going to struggle to fill a 9 man bench. Some U21s will hastily be added to the B list this week.

Priorities: -Ziyech has already replaced Pedro -Werner has already replaced Batshuayi, who will leave (slight upgrade) -Havertz to replace Willian (CHO can stay and will play plenty of minutes) -Defensive midfielder to replace Jorginho -Left-back to replace Emerson -Goalkeeper -Centre-back 2 deals done and one seemingly close. 4 more big deals would probably be too much for this window. Ampadu and Gallagher could come into the squad but would do better to have another year on loan. Signing Foster as a new GK2 sounds like a good idea, letting Cumming go out on loan. I assumed that Barkley would leave but given that the real RLC is still an unknown quantity and Gilmour is out until at least October we probably won't take the risk.

Liverpool are much better than Man U!
  10. Transfer Talk Topic

I think that we need a defensive midfielder instead of one centre-back, but otherwise that looks good. Previously I thought that this amount of turnover would take at least 2 seasons, but this summer could be a chance to make a big leap forward, bringing seven new players into the squad.
  11. Manchester United 1 Chelsea 3

The 2020-21 season will still mean 55 or so matches for Chelsea, but in a month less than normal. Presumably this means PL games every 3/4 days from 12 September to 4 October followed by the late-October to early December period where there's a Champions League/Europa League match every midweek. Who knows how they'll fit in the EFL Cup. Rotation will be even more important than normal so having Tammy, Werner and Giroud will be a massive positive. It is ok for academy players to be squad players rather than untouchables, in fact it's a lot better than wasting large transfer fees on squad players as we have in the recent past.
  12. Liverpool 5 Chelsea 3

I think it's very difficult to gauge any player's long-term fitness based on what we've seen post-lockdown, given that it's such a unique and difficult situation. If we're going to cash-in on a midfielder, I'd sell Jorginho as he would be easier to replace. As chelboy says, Kanté is unique and I think we should be trying to get the best out of him for the next two seasons. Which will mean giving him a good rest and then using him selectively until we're confident he's over his injuries.
  13. Liverpool 5 Chelsea 3

Kanté needs a proper rest, just like Hazard a few seasons ago. But he's so important to the team (despite what some people think) that he's rushed back every time. Given that there's barely any break before the next season he could end up having another stop-start season leading into the European Championships. I think we have to be prepared for him to take a couple of months to get back to full fitness, rather than forcing him to play when injured.

Whilst this is a good summer to buy, I think we'll find it even more difficult than usual to get cash for our cast-offs. Emerson and Jorginho from the first team squad could be for sale, along with loanees Bakayoko, Zappacosta, Drinkwater, Moses, Baba Rahman, Kenedy and Miazga. I think our best case scenario will again be loans with buy options, no-one is going to fork out what we'd want.
  15. Liverpool 5 Chelsea 3

Win at Anfield + Leicester or Utd drop points in their next game = nice, relaxed final day
  16. Media / Press

You're not allowed to make decent signings the summer after winning the title, that's the rules as far as we've experienced them recently.
  17. Chelsea 1 Norwich City 0

In the worst-case scenario we go into our final match like this: 3. Leicester 65 points 4. Man Utd 65 points 5. Chelsea 63 points 6. Wolves 61 points Given that Leicester and Man Utd play each other, if we beat Wolves we finish in the top 4. Where's Marcel Desailly and Jesper Gronkjaer when you need them? Favours from Sheffield Utd, Palace, Spurs or West Ham plus any points at Anfield make it possible to draw on the final day and still make top 4.

Schmeichel made an obvious error yesterday, but as he couldn't have been expected to save the eventual shot this wouldn't show on his Xg save rating. I would have thought that errors leading to goals was a more appropriate stat, but Kepa is nowhere to be found on this list (nor is Schmeichel so I don't trust their error criteria). https://www.premierleague.com/stats/top/players/error_lead_to_goal
  19. Official: Chelsea Sign Timo Werner

Or organise a defense, anticipate where the ball might drop in the 6 yard box, communicate with team mates etc...
  20. Crystal Palace 2 Chelsea 3

If we somehow hang on to third place we'll be the worst team to finish third in the Premier league since Hazard + 10 others last season.
  21. Crystal Palace 2 Chelsea 3

I don't think that Frank has confidence in Jorginho's mobility when playing as a lone defensive midfielder alongside two number 8s. Maybe with Kovacic or Kanté alongside him, but Frank will want someone capable of chasing back in the event of a counter.
  22. Chelsea 3 Watford 0

Given that Lampard has made it known that against low block teams he wants to play two numbers 8s in midfield plus one player covering, that means that the options are Mount, Barkley or Loftus-Cheek for two positions. AsLoftus-Cheek is obviously very rusty, I think that Mount and Barkley is the only realistic option at present. When we play Man U, Liverpool and Wolves I'd expect a different setup in midfield, with two of Kanté, Kovacic, Jorginho or Gilmour playing with only one attacking midfielder. With no Kanté or Kovacic tomorrow it will be very interesting to see if he picks Jorginho or Gilmour.
  23. Crystal Palace 2 Chelsea 3

Any bets on a Gary Cahill header from a set piece?
  24. Chelsea 3 Watford 0

Tomori has been unfit for a while, but this would be a good time to be back in shape...
  25. Following Chelsea's Loans

If we're lucky! Italian clubs are very good at taking our cast-offs as cheaply as possible, quite probably Zappacosta and Moses will officially be "on loan" until the end of their Chelsea contracts.
