An update on Thibaut Courtois progress at Atlético.

vs FC Barcelona

The big test, well, it didn't quite work out well. Atlético's coach, Gregorio Manzano rested four players in this game and 3/4 of the defence hadn't played together this season. Arda started on the bench as well which didn't make things easier. Barcelona smashed Atlético who just isn't anywhere near their level, especially away from home. The team didn't pressure, didn't play the ball, didn't do anything they were supposed to in this game and that's how it goes when you don't go out and play properly against Barcelona. Courtois was still the best Atlético-player despite conceding five goals, he did make four saves. Unfortunately, we didn't even take this game seriously.

vs Stade Rennais

A tough away game where Atlético were surprised by Rennes high pressing line. Rennes were better in this game and should've won but Atlético managed to find a way in and equalize before the end of it. Courtois didn't really have to make any big saves, despite them having so many shots. They kept missing the target, time after time which ultimately cost them two points. Safe in the air despite the aerial threat the French offered and did when called upon.

vs Sevilla

Didn't have anything to do until the second half started. Atlético were controlling the game and passing it around, creating chances and trying to find openings. Then..all of sudden, Sevilla woke up. They took Atlético on the counter two times in the first 15 minutes of the second half; first through a shot by Navas which was brilliantly saved by Courtois, left footed shot inside the penalty area, then Rakitić blasted the rebound over the goal. Second chance could've easily changed the game as Manu del Moral stole the ball from Mario Suárez on the halfway line and broke through, 1-on-1 with Courtois..Courtois timed the situation perfectly, Manu got a bit of a heavy touch and that's when Courtois stormed out to make a save. Another clean sheet. Apart from that, Atlético should've won this game.

Great descriptions, nice one!

Thibaut Courtois vs Granada

Another accomplished performance by Courtois when Atlético failed to get a win against Granada in Andalucia on Saturday night. He played well and had to make three saves during the game, the most complicated was when Kalu Uche had a great chance from an angle. TC saved it and the ball went out for a corner kick.

Courtois was solid in the aerial game despite some scares and the fact that Granda attacked the ball really well. The most impressive thing was his passing game where he, as always, didn't panic a single time when he got the ball at his feet; calm and collected. Finally, he got a knock when Alex Geijo ran over him, didn't train yesterday because of it, however, he's fine and trained without any problems today.

Central defender Tomas Kalas is the one that seems to be really impressing right now with Vitesse. To my mind a far better defender than Bruma is (or is likely to be). Him and Chalobah are hugely promising. But for 5 million you'd hope for something a little bit special.

Thibaut Courtois vs Granada

Thank you very much Zoric. Another really interesting report.

You mentioned 'some scares' when he was taking balls in the air. Can you elaborate?

It seems that there is no longer any doubt whatsoever that he is first choice for Atleti. Good news indeed.

Any news on Kakuta's situation ?

He doesn't seem to get the same chances as Studge last season...

No worries. There were a few situations in the air when Granada-players attacked the ball and he couldn't quite get out to grab the ball. They blocked him off rather well. Uche's header in the post was with such power and pace and that he could only watch it go past him. Luckily, didn't go into the back of the net. Courtois is #1.

Thought of asking this, is Coyle only good with young Eng players?

as for Kakuta, it's not just frustrating, but rather serious too. Little chance here, at Fulham & now at Bolton. May be the loan to Lille(if there was any concrete interest) would have been a better option.

Kakuta needs to learn really quickly. He has talent but at this moment is unable to use his talent efficiently. Tactical discipline is a crucial aspect of top flight football and he needs to learn that quickly. He's 20 already. At the rate Chelsea is chasing young players the world over, he may be forgotten soon enough.

Thanks again Zoric. It sounds like we should give Granada credit for what pros would probably say were good and clever blocks.

I know its a bit early in the season but Zoric how does Courtois compare to De Gea from what you have seen so far?I do remember De Gea making little mistakes here and there but I am yet to see that from Courtois.
