LOOOOOOOOL no he's being asked to play as a target man.

It's even worse.

No, he was being asked to play as a "false nine"  we've seen Cesc play there for Barcelona in the past , the fact his inept team mates conspired to continually hoof the ball long instead of playing themselves out of danger is the issue.

Our players are idiots , every time we play with a "false nine" they hoof the ball long , playing to our own inherent weaknesses , the moment Giroud or Morata appear they revert to the tippy tappy , it's ridiculous.

And on top of this our playing from the back is terrible when under any kind of pressing. So many times I've thought 'just clear it ' and we are passing in triangles inside our own box surrounded by oppo players.

Alternatively opposing players are geniuses - everytime we play a false 9 they step up and press our back 3 who don't have an out ball.
Actually I think it is simpler than that, the pass it about the back 3 worked fine when teams were scared of us, but it turns out we aren't nearly as good at it as we thought.

It's not even a "false nine" thing when it comes to our players hoofing the ball up field. It's like there's a complete lack of awareness when it comes to playing with any sort of striker that isn't your typical target man CF.

I think most side appear to have cottoned onto the fact that we always split the centre halves and try to play out , if you set your side up to press high ( like LIverpool and City ) we cannot cope with it and even "lesser" sides have worked it out now .

Playing without a target man just compounds it imho.

The only reason we cannot cope with it as well as desired is because you've got a severe lack of technical proficiency in most players. There's a significant difference in effectiveness if you compare us to Conte's Juventus or Italian NT sides. Technical ability on the ball and football IQ plays a huge role.

What do we do with this bloke? All the talent in the world but lacks that x-factor that takes a very good player to superstar level. In games we've needed him most, he's disappeared and been outshone.

At 27, he's no longer a young upcoming player. Under Conte is arguably been given the least amount of defensive responsibility that he's had under any prior manager - while the most freedom. With constant talks of Real Madrid each season, are we nearing a point where it may just be time to entertain offers and the idea of moving on without him?

* This isn't a reactionary post regarding the Barca game. Has been on my mind for some time.
