As above, I agree that there's no way we should be spending any money on defenders for the next 3 years, given the investments we've already made and the players we have coming through.

Can't agree with this- I look at our current XI and Cahill seems the weakest link. Terry is 34 next week and every other specialist CB is an unknown quantity. Ivanovic is a favourite of mine but I'd be surprised if he can keep up the excellent job he does athletically for another 3 years.

I'd personally have CB as the number 1 place to spend big money next summer; we should be looking to improve the XI as well as the squad and that's the most realistic position to improve in, perhaps alongside a right-sided attacker.

I know a lot of people won't like this but I can't see us with a squad of more than 25, when including goalkeepers and "squad players", as it's not Jose's style to have a big squad. Firstly, I think people really need to get over having 6 AM if it's not including Boga type players. I say this as all you've got to do is look at Salah, now admittedly Salah isn't the greatest player on earth but he is still a decent player that would get into the first team of around 8-10 PL sides minimum but how much game time does he see here? Diddly squat, and that's as a fifth choice and according to reports he is looking to leave/the club are looking to move him on. Now I have to ask which two players are we going to get to fill Salah's place and 6th choice, while conforming to HG rules? Some say Moses but why would he come back to us? He is playing week in, week out for Stoke and playing well to come back and be 6th choice would show a) a lack of ambition b) no real love for playing and c) greed (as it would require us to pay him over the odds). Maybe he would come back as fifth choice but that puts us in the same position as we're in now and I doubt he really fancies just the odd bench appearance and maybe a run out against Shrewsbury in the FA Cup. Now, I know people are going to pipe up about Reus and while I am happy for us to see home come in, you're also going to have to accept that one of Schurrle or Willian will leave (most likely Schurrle ATM) as no way in hell are one of them two going to be fifth choice as they've seen what happens to fifth choice AM's at Chelsea (if you want to argue that Salah isn't good enough look at KDB also). While, as for those that say we could rotate more, I'm sorry but I don't see Jose changing a habit of a lifetime and embracing chopping and changing in order to have a deep squad, whilst I also want to know where all the changes some suggest to keep 6 players happy works? Because I don't /didn't see Ferguson/Pep/Jose/Hitzfield/Ancellotti do it, I just see people like Claudio/Wenger/Pellegrini doing it.

As for CB, I think this area will need to be addressed shortly. For me Kalas has stalled and even if he does come back he will only be 4th choice quality, the same goes for Omeruo (who I'm not convinced about being good enough for elite level), Zouma may be good enough but he has had so little football for the past year that he could do with a loan before being thrown in the deep end, Ivanovic is better at RB, Cahill is the weakest member of the first XI and Terry will drop off at some point in the near future. Now, on the other hand I do think Christensen will/can make it to elite level, however he needs to get games and bulk up as at the moment he has neither the experience or the conditioning to play at the top end of the PL/CL, so for me he will need 18 months out on loan at a good level before we can draft him in. So for me, of the young players Christensen and Zouma have a chance but will probably need loans to get the minutes under their belt (Zouma may be able to start starting games soon as he has had some experience of senior football and he has the conditioning), while I think that Kalas and Omeruo will continued to be loaned and eventually sold. As a result, for me CB will need addressing in the next window or two with a player that is good enough to be an instant starter.

Imo, Omeruo is the pick of the bunch by a margin, and deserves to be in this squad now. People need to watch this young fella play (and clearly, most haven't), because he's very, very good, and streets ahead of Zouma on the ground, and between the ears. Christensen should be next in line - great poise and technique for a kid. Zouma needs to be shot out on loan asap, so he can make his mistakes at somebody else's cost.

I have watched quite a bit of Omeruo, but obviously we see different things! Personally I question he game intelligence as when I watch him I find that he is a reactive player and not proactive player (by this I mean eradicates the danger early), hence he can look good at making challenges but for me a lot of those could be avoided. In my book he has the skill set to make it to decent PL standard and maybe 3/4th choice here (at a stretch) but I don't think he'll go any higher, however if I am proven wrong (which isn't unlikely) then I would be more than happy to admit so!

Only seen Omeruo for Nigeria, but every time I've seen him play, and against top opposition, he's looked good.

I would tend to agree with you, although it must be considered that Zouma has played at a higher level for longer than Omeruo, and not looked bad, either. But the bold bit is still correct, IMO.

While Omeruo, Chalobah (not as CB, IMO) and Christensen look ready for a step up, Zouma really needs to consolidate and become consistent (and thereby reliable). If he did that, he'd be ready for Chelsea, IMO.

That said, I think Christensen needs at least a year at the gym until he can take the field in the EPL. He's 6 foot 2, but so slight that no skill in the world will help him when the likes of Lukaku or Bony come a-knocking. Needs at least another 20 or 30 pounds of mass, if not more.

If you're confident you're superior, why wouldn't you play it safe? By risking the early tackle, he risks exposure and being beaten by someone he doesn't need to be beaten by. By playing the way he does, he supports his co-defenders and influences the overall quality of the defence much more with his individual ability. Admittedly, those skills aren't as important in a better defence, where most of the danger is snuffed out early, but it's still a part of defending.

The way he plays against better opposition is telling. His game reading and decisionmaking are good, if not perfect. What will need work is gelling with a top level defence (which is what we're hoping Zouma can do, but here I agree with Droy, I'd expect Omeruo would do better, faster).

What are all these mistakes people are referring to from Zouma? Seems to have done alright when I have seen him

Yeah, he's done pretty well whenever I've seen him too. Not perfect, and you can definitely see that he has a lot to learn, but his upside looks pretty big IMO. He's going to be a very good player.

Apparently he was a bit shaky in some pre-season games.
