Plot thickens... Costa included in our squad?

Not really, we have plenty of space to name him in our squad.

If for whatever reason we need to get solicitors involved we have done everything in the right way.

Yes, we could do with more depth but I am not sure players 18-22 are goingt to make a huge difference in the CL knockout stages.

Yes Indeed.  When we won the CL I think we used just one player (aged 22) in just one knock out stage game.

Mind you we had 10 other established over 23 pros in the team, 6 more on the bench and JY, Ivanovic, Ramires and Meireles suspended.  The remaining 20 yo sub on the bench had 17 first team starts that season

Be lucky to make it out of the group.

Also, a suicidally-attacking team that would get utterly destroyed by any half decent opponent.

Surely it'd be alright for Qarabag at the bridge?

A bit of irony here.
Not least because we went from Premier League champions to a mid table team by not having enough players in the squad.

For the fifth season in the row we have had enough star players in the squad to justify expectations of winning the Prem.  For the 4th season in a row we have gone very close to the line on player numbers.

But we then went from mid table to Champions again with not having enough players in the squad?

The only area that worries me is the attack, purely on numbers. 5 players for 3 positions isn't enough.

Yes that is a huge worry. Pedro, Hazard, Willian, Morata and Bats will have to be involved every game, either as a starter or as a very likely sub. We better hope Musonda is seen as a proper squad option and that he miraculously will have a massive break-out season.

This line of reasoning always irks me. It doesn't matter at all where Chelsea have come from, what does matter is where they are now and, more importantly, where they want to be. Expectations are high because Chelsea, by their own admittance, want to position themselves at Europe's top table, yet their transfer business over the past five years has not been in keeping with a club that harbours those ambitions. Two league titles in three years might placate many but this is a club that has won just two knockout ties in the Champions League in the last five years - one of those on away goals - and that simply isn't good enough for a club that talks the talk.

My gosh. That hits the spot. Couldn't have said it any better myself.

Except that the very best clubs in Europe are able to retain a full squad of top class players, players certainly better than Chelsea's questionable depth.

Chelsea: Caballero, Rudiger, Christensen, Clarke-Salter, Kenedy, Zappacosta, Drinkwater, Fabregas, Willian, Musonda, Batshuayi

Real Madrid: Casilla, Varane, Vallejo, Nacho, Hernandez, Kovacic, Ceballos, Vazquez, Bale, Mayoral, Benzema

Barcelona: Cillessen, Semedo, Umtiti, Vermaelen, Digne, Rafinha, Gomes, Paulinho, Arda, Deulofeu, Alcacer

Juventus: Szczesny, Benatia, Howedes, Rugani, De Sciglio, Asamoah, Matuidi, Sturaro, Cuadrado, Bernardeschi, Mandzukic

Bayern: Ulreich, Rafinha, Sule, Martinez, Bernat, Tolisso, Rudy, James, Coman, Ribery, ? (CF2 at Bayern is the only notable position missing in any of these comparisons)

Chelsea's second XI bears no comparison to anyone else there really and, once again, it's going to show in Europe. There's nothing spoilt or reactionary about wanting your club to be the best in the world, especially when it harbours the same ambitions, and there's nothing wrong with demanding more from them.

You could do the same for the top six.

Arsenal: Ospina, Debuchy, Mertesacker, Holding, Mustafi, LWB, Coquelin, Elneny, Walcott, Lacazette, Giroud

Players 23-31: Chambers, Wilshere, Reine-Adelaide, Cazorla, Maitland-Niles, Iwobi, Akpom, Nelson

Liverpool: Karius, Alexander-Arnold, Klavan, CB, Robertson, Milner, Can, Grujic, Oxlade-Chamberlain, Sturridge, Lallana

Players 23-30: Clyne, Flanagan, Ejaria, Markovic, Wilson, Solanke, Woodburn, Ings

Man C: Bravo, Danilo, Mangala, Otamendi, LB, Delph, Toure, Gundogan, Sane, Jesus, Zinchenko

Players 23-25: Adarabioyo, Foden, Diaz

Man U: Romero, Darmian, Lindelöf, Rojo, Shaw, Herrera, Fellaini, Lingard, Zlatan, Martial

Players 23-26: Tuanzebe, Smalling, Carrick, Young

Tottenham: Vorm, Trippier, Sanchez, Foyth, Davies, Wanyama, Winks, Lamela, Sissoko, N'Koudou, Llorente

Players 23-24: Walker-Peters, Janssen

Chelsea: Caballero, Rudiger, Christensen, Clarke-Salter, Zappacosta, Drinkwater, Fabregas, Kenedy, Musonda Jr., Batshuayi, Willian

Except that argument doesn't wash when some of those players have been at their respective clubs for a while and how do you know they are happy/content with being bench warmers. The fact is signing top class players now in this current market to warm a bench is a nigh on impossible task and anyone who thinks otherwise imo is deluded or naive (take your pick).

Basically what Juni says below. It's not about buying players and plant them in the bench. Conte's supposed to use the players.

6 hours ago, Juni said:

You don't know they're happy, same as you don't know whether Chelsea's are happy, you can only ever take them at face value and appreciate that not only are their second XIs much stronger, they're also actually used with far greater regularity than Conte will use his backup options.

You've tried to reiterate that it's an impossible task to sign top class players to warm the bench but nobody's tried to dispute that; it's about having quality, functional players to serve that purpose. Chelsea's second XI features two players who've never made a PL start and two more in Kenedy and Christensen who've made less than five combined. Juventus and Barcelona have 11 internationals, Real Madrid have 8 with three U21s who will be seniors before long, and Bayern have 9 plus the veteran backup Ulreich who rarely plays because Neuer is the best in the world.

That is the standard. Chelsea are a long way off of that. Why should we just shrug and say 'oh well' when it's their very aim to try to compete with these teams?

Yeah I thought this actually.  Baba will also be an upgrade on Kenedy in a few months if registered.

Kind of pointless saying now I guess, but IF we would have got Llorente, that would have been a very strong squad indeed.

A LWB, AM and another S and we would have been home.

Either Musonda or Boga should have a breakout season. But we were too smart for ourselves we felt there was no need for Boga. Really thought he was ready to play some role this season.
