There is quite a long list of free transfers in summer 2018 published on Sky Sports. There are about 10 who would interest me, becasue they are free transfers and would add depth

Goreztka, Robben, Ribery, Mata, Ozil, Sanchez, Ghoulam, Bernard, Barkley, Can, De Vrij would all add depth

Even Shaw and Blind could cover the LWB position

Some of that list are 30+ but would be good "bridging" players before some of the younger ones are ready

You forgot Messi 😉

Errr no, just no.

Bit hilarious to even suggest such a thing. Hazard 2014-15 was his best season to date.

And no, it's not just my opinion.

Hazard was very good that season, but imo he was even better last season. Getting him in more central areas makes him increasingly efficient. Not having to track back like he had to in 4-2-3-1 will also save his energy for the final third. So I think 3-5-2 is an even better formation for him, and that we will see the best of Hazard if we continue with that system.

So I am not going to give you that one. But what I will give you is that I already knew you would respond to my post, because your reflex is to always support whatever JM did :-)

Edit-Already discussed above.

Mata. Yes please. Shaw and Barkley would also be useful.

I'm sorry but that last bit is a tad spuriois and has nothing to do with facts.

He was player of the year in 2014-15. Maybe all the players in the league felt they had to protect Mourinho as well? Sounds likely. Not.

2014-15 is also the only season where Hazard has competed at the top, top level for a full year in a season which wasn't a one-off (last season only the league and FA Cup to play for). To keep that level of performance in 14/15 was a hell of a lot more of an achievement than to do it for 36 games in 16/17.

In my and a lot of others opinion Hazard was at least as worthy player of the year as Kante last season, and clearly would have won it had it not been for the insane season Kanté had. I agree that there is a difference playing in the CL as well, and yes he played 9 more matches that season.

I really think we should sign Gareth Barry.....................Stand him at the end of the tunnel and get him to kick Hazard when he walks by on his way to the pitch.

Goerezka is a player I can see us going after, especially if we stick to a 352 formation as he is a goal scoring No.8, which is the main role we lack in our 352 formation. Barkley will be looked at because he ticks an English box and he was down for a medical in the summer. De Vrij I think is unlikely as that would require selling two of Luiz, Zouma, Cahill and Rudiger to fit him in.

After that, I doubt we will be after many of the listed as too many are over 30, or fast approaching it, and the rest are not good enough. Obviously Sanchez would be amazing but with wages that are likely to hit a minimum £300k, that is not even worth thinking about.

Cahill, Luiz, Fabregas, Willian, Pedro will all be 30+, and GK2&3 will be 36+.

By Chelsea standards were going to have to do a lot of bridging at the Bridge.
Or more likely the squad will be as next year as it is now.

I guess players have a pretty short life if you won't play them before they are 24 or after they are 29.

Goerezka would be a excellent option that would fill a requirement and a niche area we're lacking in. With Koeman leaving Everton there could be a chance Barkley stays for the time being. That said, even if that doesn't happen I don't really see where Barkley fits in - be it 352 or 343. He's not good enough to be a CM currently. While lacks the forward instincts we need more of at AM. Other than being English there aren't too many pro's to such a deal. We'd be banking on some significant player development to take place in the vein of Lampard.

De Vrij could go either way at this point. There's part of me that thinks Conte still wants another bigger physical CB who has composure on the ball and the technique to play comfortably from the back. This would threaten our two weakest links in that department - Cahill and Zouma. Cahill I like, although he has his limitations and will be 32 next month, there's still value in him if he's happy to stay in a role that would see him start less games. His knack for a goal and experience can still be useful. Zouma on the other hand has no real future here imo while we play with a back three. Even though he's playing in such a system for Stoke, his technical short comings are far too much of a weak point to really trust him in a system that see's our CB's build from the back and spend a lot of time with possession - which isn't how Stoke play. He's worse than Cahill in that department and there's little chance we'll see Zouma replace Cahill long term. Now, if we move to a traditional back four again, Zouma becomes a more viable option. I see him spending another season out on loan.

As an outside option, I think Can would be a neat little addition on a free. I know Juve have been highly interested in him the last 12-18 months and think he could play a role here if he stayed in the EPL. Outside of that I don't see there being much we'd be interested tbh. Those who are 30+ are unlikely given their age and our policy with such players. While everyone else doesn't fill too much of a need. Ghoulam is about the only other option but he's apparently set to sign a new contract at Napoli at some point by reports.
