I think the Luiz deal is a good one. 25 million pounds for a 3rd, possibly 4th choice centreback/3rd choice, played out of position midfielder is great.

He's been a solid player for us and a great character off and on the pitch but he's surplus to requirements right now, the money can and should be used to bring in better players

I agree with this. If we assume JT and Cahill are first choice CBs next season. Plus there is Kalas and Zouma (unless he is loaned) then assuming a new left back is signed, that frees up Azpilicueta to play right back and Ivanovic can cover at CB. All of that means that if Luiz is to stay and play CM, then we are better off buying a specialist in that role, not someone shoe-horned in.

I disagree on Luiz. Have written a lot about his qualities before, but just want to say that I believe he will be on of three CMs that will be "shared first choice" for the two positions next year. Matic is the other one obviously, and a new signing will be the third.

The Matic - Luiz partnership has been absolutely brilliant in the big games. Dont expect many to argue on that. They are extremely powerful, and to have a big, strong duo with defensive capabilities and a good balance between them of risk-aversion/willingness makes them a great pairing. Maybe not 100% perfect for Norwich at home, but definitely against top sides.

I hope the third signing is someone like Modric (though too expensive considering his age probably), a box opener whose passing is inch perfect. Or someone like Barkley, with the ability to drift pass opponents easily with ball glued to their feet.

In the pivot it is important that both players can defend and attack. But someone will always have to be the most defensive, and the other the more attacking. Matic will be the defensive, and Modric/Barkley the attacking, with Luiz capable of playing both roles. Keep Lampard as a fourth option, and add further depth with some of the younger players like van Ginkel (I expect a loan here), Ake, Swift, Baker, RLC.

Neither Mikel or Ramires are double pivot players, and should be sold. Huge contribution from both lads, and wish them all the best. But the last season has given the proof that they are not the perfect set of players for our style.

How many games? City away, Arsenal at home......

What if we were to end up 433 though. Mikel is a 433 player and arguably so is Ramires. Willian and Oscar could possibly play the 2 more advanced roles, rotating with Lampard, van Ginkel and Ramires. Mikel could share the deeper role with Matic. Just need to buy Reus :-)

^I'd like to go 433 too, since I don't really see Mikel, or Luiz or Matic playing anywhere but DM in a V, and if we play with 2 CMs then none of them fit.

But we seem to be attached to this chasing the defenders all over their own half style, and I have to admit I find it fun to watch (schadenfreude oh what fun a young Damien Duff would have had in this team).

I don't think you can do that without 4231 (or even just 424 if we can find a CF to work too).

In which case while Oscar, Willian Schurlle and sometimes Ramires are great for the hard running 3, we need some mobile CMs who can join in on occasion, but cover defensively too. Ramires is probably best now, Lampard was best, Essien was superb, and my sneaking suspicion is that Azpi will turn out to be a star CM.

But the point is that 2 out of Mikel, Luiz and Matic can go, and we need 2 or 3 proper all-around CMs (and another Schurlle type). Ramires is probably the mid-fielder with most to do next season. Mikel is probably the most mobile of the 3 out and out DMs.

4:3:3; in my opinion would give us much more versatility. DM: Mikel/Matic; CM: Oscar, Willian, Ramires, Van Ginkel, Lampard; LW/RW: Hazard, Shurrle, Salah, Reus?; ST: Costa? Benzema? Cavani?

We would be able to let our wingers be more free role too.

For all the talk of Kroos and Vidal, there hasn't been much said about Pjanic, who's had a fantastic year for a very good Roma side. Probably one of the top 3 players in Serie A this season, and would be a great addition as a CM.

Would still be pricey, but gettable IMO.

I know this is probably off-topic, but I am feeling really optimistic about next season (do I sound like a Liverpool fan?). I look at the squad and I see so many brilliant players. And then the last week I have been watching the youth and the U-21s and there are more there too. It's a wonderful time to be a Chelsea supporter.

Fantastic player. I would just tip Vidal as better because he has more balance to his game. But he beats Kroos in every department for me.

Hazard wont be here beyond next season,he wont sign an extension with JM in charge.Play for a manager demanding defence first or enjoy your football somewhere else.
