Nice one... 22p ahead of you aussieblue. Still some way to go but I'll give you this - I won't just park the bus and chose the same XI as you to close it out. I'll try to go full throttle and pick the XI I think will have the biggest chance to score an 11.

Points of Interest Round thirty-Eight

Welcome to kdouglas1987 who took on The Challenge for the first time today and what a tough game to start with. Reading Jose's mind turned out to be no easy task ahead of this game. As a result, scores were definitely on the low side.

In fact scores have gone from the sublime to the ridiculous today. The last round (#37) saw you set a new record high for the average number of hits per entry at 10.20. This time around Jose has given you a tougher task and you've almost broken the record for the lowest average hits per entry. Almost, but not quite. Your average today was 6.61 which is the second lowest ever. This is just three-hundredths of hit better than the season's low which was 6.58 set against Steaua on 11th December.

The first indicators that it was going to be a tough round came from the facts that nineteen different players appeared in predictions for today's line-up and there were no fewer than thirteen updated entries. When, as a group, you can't agree about who might start that's usually a bad sign.

A part of the reason for the low scores was the surprise exclusion of Mark Schwarzer although not as large a part I thought it might be. As many as nine members left Mark out of their predictions and included Petr Cech instead . Well played to all of them because, like everyone else, I was pretty certain Mark would start. Another part of the reason for the low scores was Gary Cahill's selection. Only Richard Redmond, SZB LOVES CHELSEA & Zwicky, included him in their predictions and, interestingly, all three posted their predictions before yesterday's press conference.

Sometimes the ability to update a prediction helps members improve their scores and sometimes it doesn't. Eight members posted updated teams and half of those took Cahill out of their line-ups in those updates. On the other hand A Blue Essien, aussieblue53, Gaurav_blue & Sleeping Dave used their updates to bring Petr Cech into their predictions. It wasn't a particularly great day overall for AB however. More on that in a moment.

Congratulations to Richard Redmond whose nine hits earned him a fifth top of the season today and saw him gain twelve points on third placed Sea foot. The gap between them is now down to just three points because SF had as tough a day as more or less everyone else.

Six hits in a round is not an outright worst ever day for SF however, only joint worst. Sea foot has scored six hits on three previous occasions, the last of which was against Fulham in September. Those six-hitters all came in the early days of The Challenge and, if I remember rightly, it wasn't long after the Fulham game that SF posted to say that his scores only started improving once he figured out that he was supposed to nominate the team he thought Jose might pick and not the one he would have picked himself! :) :)

Meanwhile, Five tops for the season puts Richard second in that category behind Sleeping Dave who also scored nine hits and narrowly missed out on what would have been an eighth top. It was still a good day for Dave though because his twenty-seven points today were six more than second placed aussieblue53 managed. Dave's lead at the top is now up to twenty-two. He is playing brilliantly so it's going to be tough to reel him in. AB's cause hasn't been helped by our defeat today either.

With today's loss, five potential FA Cup ties come off the fixture list. (Two possible replays, a quarter-final, a semi-final and the final itself.) Fewer matches to play, equals fewer opportunities to close the gap. There are now a minimum of fourteen and a maximum of nineteen rounds remaining in the RJMC 2013-14. Whichever way you cut it, that's more than a point a round AB needs to claw back. What's more, from now on we have nothing but two point fixtures. That's to say two points will be awarded per hit in all remaining rounds of The Challenge.

Round 38 was the final game before the draw for the first qualifying round of the Read Jose's Mind Challenge Champion's League so the race for direct entry into the group stage is over. As expected both NorwayBlue and middxguy have overtaken bluecueball and moved into 15th and 16th places respectively. They therefore secure the last automatic places in the group stage and bluecueball will have to qualify.

The race for group stage seedings is not yet over however. The seeds will be based on positions in the leaderboard when the groups are drawn. Members therefore have two more rounds to try to improve their placings.

Speaking of which Zoowraa had some bad luck today. He didn't post an entry for this round. That's the first RJMC he's missed since he joined in round three and it was damaging. Scoring zero points today means that Zoowraa has dropped to 9th place in the leaderboard, behind SZB in 8th. The gap is fourteen points which is going to be difficult to make up in the two rounds remaining before seedings are finalised. It therefore looks like Zoowraa will be among the second seeds.

I'll post the draw for the first qualifying round on Monday.

Everton Next.

Well spoken Dave.

I am also hoping that the RJMC Champions' League will add its own pressure to the situation. I can see there being occasions when a member might be tempted to go man-for-man with a near challenger in the leaderboard as well as with a direct opponent in the RJMC CL. If the two opponents have picked different line-ups there would be a decision to be made and priorities to be set.

That's my hope but we'll see if it works out like that. I suppose though that the best way to handle that decision if it arises might be to do as you suggest and simply pick what you think is the right team and let everything else take care of itself.

Today hurt big time, going to be tough but its not over yet, we've had pretty large point swings in the past and still a fair few games to go! But today rivals your selection when Willian first started (can't remember the opposition). Nice work mate.

Cheers mate!

True, you had a 14p advantage at one stage that I managed to close. I also think I had a pretty decent lead in the beginning of the challenge and you reeled me in and passed me. Think you might have gained over 20p on me at one stage.

So yeah, it ain't over until it's over!

Cheers mate!

True, you had a 14p advantage at one stage that I managed to close. I also think I had a pretty decent lead in the beginning of the challenge and you reeled me in and passed me. Think you might have gained over 20p on me at one stage.

So yeah, it ain't over until it's over!

AB's biggest turnaround vs Dave was fourteen points gained over the first seven rounds. AB established a fourteen point lead over those seven rounds and held on to it after round 8 (Spurs, 28th September) but that is as good as it's been for him - so far!

The biggest turnaround AB has managed in his favour since then is twelve points. (Between round 24, when he was fourteen points behind Dave, and round 29 when he was just two points behind.)

To establish his current lead, Dave has achieved a thirty-six point turnaround since round 8 when he was fourteen points behind. That's been done over the course of thirty rounds which makes it seem that it's a slow process but there's a but...

After Liverpool on 29th December, Dave was was only 2 points ahead. He's therefore gained twenty points in nine rounds. Granted there were three FA Cup matches in that spell with three points per hit but, even so, if twenty points can be gained in nine rounds then twenty-two points can certainly be lost in the minimum fourteen rounds we have left.
