Report on Round Forty-two

The RJMC_CL group stage is up and running and the home advantage factor has already had an impact. Nine of the sixteen members playing with home advantage yesterday scored an additional hit when Oscar was introduced as the first of Jose’s substitutes and two of those hits changed the outcome of the tie. Bristol Blue rescued a point in the match up with Orininal21 and Bob Singleton snatched all three points with his injury-time winner.

Remember it’s three home, and three away ties for everybody in the group stage. Remember too that the top two members in each group will progress to the knock-out phase with the eight group winners having home advantage in the last-sixteen ties. The second set of group matches will be played using predictions for the visit to Aston Villa on Saturday 15th March.

Meanwhile, back in the main challenge, it’s congratulations to Scooba who achieved his sixth top of the season in this round. That’s two behind category leader Sleeping Dave who has eight tops, and one ahead of Richard Redmond who has 5. In terms of leaderboard placing, Scooba is in a bit of an island in seventh. He is twenty-one points behind sixth place and fifteen points ahead of eighth. He therefore has a bit of a gap ahead of him and a bit of a cushion behind. Not everybody is in that situation however..

We have a minimum of ten, and a maximum of fifteen, rounds to go. (Please let it be fifteen! J ) Up and down the leaderboard the race for places is on. One of the most interesting tussles involves two of our newer members. Inferno & Original21 both made their RJMC debut in round 37 against WBA on 11th February and have remained more or less neck and neck ever since. Inferno leads by four points currently.

The tightest race though is the one just below the top-two where only twelve points separate Bristol Blue and Richard Redmond in joint third place, from A Blue Essien in sixth. All of those positions are up for grabs and will come down to who can maintain the best form over the home straight.

Speaking of form; for the first time since 3rd of February, Sleeping Dave is off the top of the current form table. That’s seven rounds ago. He’s down to second, one point behind new leader Scooba. Dave has nevertheless managed to maintain his thirty point lead over ausieblue53 at the top of the leaderboard. Such has been Dave’s form that AB has only managed to outperform him in two out of the last sixteen rounds. Is either of you ready to claim, or concede, the title gentlemen?

There is another interesting race brewing. Among members with more than eight entries in the RJMC, cup finalist 3Sphinx has the highest AR at 83.9 which means that 83.9% of his predictions have proved accurate. Sleeping Dave’s form has seen his own AR move to exactly 1% behind at 82.9. Ever since 3Sphinx first took on the challenge in mid-October, it’s looked like he had the AR title sewn up. Now though there’s work to do. I’ll keep an eye on how this one is going.

Jose’s back four has really settled down hasn’t it? All but one of the predictions for yesterday’s game correctly named the entire back four. The odd one out was NorwayBlue who went for David Luiz instead of John Terry. That may have been a tactical move, I don’t know, but it didn’t work out this time. JT therefore missed out on being a unanimous hit but the rest of the back four all were, as were Nemanja Matic and Eden Hazard along with Petr Cech of course.

With so many probables in the side at the moment, it’s tough to achieve a big point swing in a single round. That makes the choice members make for the unsettled places vital if they want to make gains on their rivals. In reality there were really only four positions where genuine decisions needed to be made against Spurs. Little surprise therefore that only fifteen different players were named in predictions for this round.

As usual when the number of players named is low, the average number of hits per entry, 9.02, was above the overall average for the season so far. (8.63) It wasn’t as much above average as might have been expected however. This is quite probably because sixteen members were robbed of a hit by the pre-match injury which Torres suffered. If Nando had started the average number of hits per entry would have been 9.91 and that would have been the fourth highest ever.

^ The competition is called 'Read Jose's Mind', not 'Read the Future';)

So yeah, I reckon Torres should count.

As for the question, it's a fair point, however I have stated previously that the eleven that actually starts the game is the one that counts. The reason I established the rule in that way is, I'm afraid, that I don't put it past the boss to stretch every rule in the book. How can we be absolutely certain that Jose planned for Torres to start? :)

It seemed to me that working with the actual starters is the best way to have consistency so I've awarded a hit for Eto'o and a miss for Torres. From memory I think another player was forced to withdraw after the team sheets were declared earlier in the season. Can anyone remember for sure if that did happen? Certainly if it did happen then it would have been handled in the same way

Hello Stan

Firstly, as you are aware of, I'm a massive fan of your work with this competition. Your unselfishness is astounding and it is nothing short of spectacular that you sacrifice so much of your spare time to make sure people you have never met, and are unlikely to ever meet, will have a great time and enjoy this site even more.

To return to the point of discussion. Firstly, I cannot remember this ever being brought up previously. I've had a lot on my mind workwise lately so forgive me in advance if I remember incorrrectly. This scenario has been on my mind previously and for me the outcome of such a rare case as we witnessed on saturday night is obvious. Torres should count. I'm not just saying this because this would be in my favour this time. I'm saying that because based on the spirit of this competition Torres is the most correct answer. The competition is called 'Read Jose's Mind' and I think that is hard enough to not have to start taking into account such arbitrary variables such as a last minute injury after the XI has officially been named and handed in to the ref.

My answer would have been the same had I actually chosen Eto'o to start.

As for your fears of Mourinho using this as a tactic. Well, Torres is officially injured and confirmed to be out for weeks. That he would use this as a tactic in a game would have to be deemed as extremely unlikely if not completely out of the question. This will set a precedent for all similar cases and as such I don't think it would be completely absurd to have a little vote about it.

Some may think this is just another exciting and unexpected barrier one has to overcome to be crowned the Champion, Others may think it's Jose's actual tactical gameplan that should count.

Or maybe I'm just making way too much fuss about this and I should just move on and probably have to wait a season or two before the situation arises again?

Thought I'd put it out there. Cause I sure hope this will just be the first of many Read Jose´s Mind seasons:)

^^Dave and all,

Firstly, I completely accept that Dave is talking out of principle and not self-interest. One-hundred percent.

Secondly, I'm perfectly happy to be guided by the group if people would like change the ruling and give priority to the team as originally declared rather than to the one which starts the game. Unless that is, this situation did happen earlier in the season and it happened in an RJMC Cup game. If that was the case then I would definitely have given priority to the starting team over the one that was named and I would ten feel compelled to stick with the precedent.

The reason I have a suspicion that this might have happened is that I remember mentioning the way I would handle the situation and I think the most likely reason for me to have done that would be because it came up. I'll look into it.

Meanwhile, I have added a poll here to collect people's opinions and votes.

^ Cheers Stan.

Fully agreed. If a ruling like this has already been made for a Cup game and it would have altered the outcome of that game then we can't change it.
