Report on Round 53 of The Challenge

Welcome to Paul Mcgoochan who took on the challenge for the first time today. Where you been? :) Eight hits on your debut is a good start, especially on what was a tough day for everyone.

Is anyone old enough to remember Brian Clough applauding his Nottingham Forest team off the pitch at Anfield after they'd lost their first game in over a year to end a top-flight record run of forty-nine unbeaten games? If you're old enough you probably do, it was an iconic moment. Tonight I think we should all applaud Gaurav_blue. The RJMC Cup winner lost his first cup-tie of the season today. You've had a great season Gaurav, well played and you are still in with a shout of a top twelve finish.

I'm sure that Gaurav will join me in congratulating Norway Blue on the win. NB has had a few bad breaks over the season so he deserves this I think. Congratulations also to A Blue Essien who took his place in the RJMC_CL semi-finals with a one hit win over middxguy. The other two quarter finals went the distance.

The aussieblue53 vs. akshayathreya tie finished 9-9 in normal time so moved into extra-time but, as AB had hinted, it was always destined for a penalty shootout after akshayatreya changed his prediction to go man-for-man with aussieblue’s line up. I don’t know if this was tactical or coincidence, but if it was tactical then that’s a legitimate and brave choice to make. Brave because it takes things to the lottery of a shootout. Both members scored their first spot kicks courtesy of Bristol Blue and Original21, then both missed their second penalty when SZB LOVES CHELSEA and Sciatika each scored fewer than the average number of hits today.

That effectively took the best-of-three shootout to sudden death with penalty takers needing to beat today’s average hits per entry of 8.26. Next up for AB was Gaurav_blue who’s seven hits therefore resulted in a miss. As luck would have it, akshayathreya himself was next up to take a spot kick. (Remember, members can be allocated to take a kick for themselves but not for their opponents.) With the tie on the line, akshayathreya’s nine hits was just enough to score and clinch a place in the semis.

The Psycho Pianist vs. Sleeping Dave was a lower scoring affair having finished 7-7 in normal time. TPP then moved ahead 8-7 when Jose brought Willian on. Next, Jose introduced Cahill who had been a part of both member’s predictions. That made it 9-8 to TPP and so it remained until six-minutes from the end when Dave would have been relieved to see Torres warming up. Nando’s arrival allowed Dave to equalise and take the tie to penalties. The shootout was won by our overall leader when Box of Tricks (9 hits) was the only one of the six penalty takers to score for either member. Dave therefore takes his place in his second semi-final of the season and will be hoping to go one better this time.

The semi-finals will be drawn tomorrow and will be decided by predictions for the game against Norwich next Sunday. Once again there will be no home advantage in these ties but they will involve extra-time and penalties if required.

Congratulations to Original21 who achieved a first top of the season with today’s ten-hitter. The top was secured because the winning post appeared about nine-hours before Bristol Blue’s and about a day and a half earlier than WHYSOSLOWYEAH’s. Part of the reason that O21 and WSSY did so well was that, along with Box of Tricks, they were the only members to make the right call about Tomas Kalas which was evidence of how tough it was today. Everybody else thought Gary Cahill would get the nod. Oops. J

Kalas and Cahill were one of twenty different players who were named in predictions for this round. That’s the joint third highest number ever. The record remains the twenty-two players who were named in predictions for the Cap One game with Sunderland and the FA Cup game with Derby. I doubt that number will be beaten now. For one thing Jose might not have twenty-two realistic options to choose from for any remaining fixture. What with injuries, suspensions and ineligibilities TSO can probably only dream of having that many options this side of the transfer window.

What does Sleeping Dave have in common with Liverpool? Nothing, the title is still in his hands. J Aussieblue may have climbed to the top of the current form table and clawed back eight points over the last three rounds but it’s looking a lost cause now. At the most there are four games remaining in the challenge meaning a maximum of 104 points to play for. We can therefore start quantifying what Dave has to do to clinch the title. 71 points will do it for sure but any combination of points gained by Dave or dropped by AB which adds up to 71 will get the job done.

b]The Psycho Pianist vs. Sleeping Dave was a lower scoring affair having finished 7-7 in normal time. TPP then moved ahead 8-7 when Jose brought Willian on. Next, Jose introduced Cahill who had been a part of both members predictions. That made it 9-8 to TPP and so it remained until six-minutes from the end when Dave would have been relieved to see Torres warming up. Nandos arrival allowed Dave to equalise and take the tie to penalties. The shootout was won by our overall leader when Box of Tricks (9 hits) was the only one of the six penalty takers to score for either member. Wow! I need to study the rule book more. I was certain I had lost cause Willian came on and I thought TPP had home advantage. Delighted to see that's not the case! The dream of a double is still alive!

Unlucky TPP. Well played sir!

Edit: my result (7 hits) shows why this challenge is so hard. I've been good at separating the XI I think Jose will field to the one I want Jose to field. For this game I didn't and I immediately had a lower result than normal!

What does Sleeping Dave have in common with Liverpool? Nothing...

Thank you Stan. You're too kind!!! ;)

The second qualifying round featured home advantage because some people earned it through their position in the leaderboard, and the last-sixteen featured it because group winners had also earned it. All other knock out rounds are neutral.
