Report on Predictions for Round Fifty-four

Welcome to My Blood Is Blue and robbieg who both took on the Challenge for the first time in this round. The fact that robbieg’s nine hits were good enough to finish joint second, while My Blood Is Blue’s eight hits ranked joint nineteenth, indicates what a tight round this was.

When I saw the line up my immediate thought was that we’d see quite a low scoring round but actually, when you looked again, the only real googly Jose bowled us was Azpilicueta’s positional change. If you slotted Dave at left-back, dropped Ash, and replaced him with one of the usual AMs, you’d have a pretty normal team that wouldn’t be far from the one most people expected. In fact, if the AM you brought in was Oscar, you’d have the side Jedini predicted would be selected.

That would have given Jedini his first official, and second unofficial, 11/11 of the season. As it was however Oscar didn’t start and Ash did so Jedini had to settle for one less than the maximum. Ten hits was still enough to win the round however. Some of you might remember Jedini made an 11/11 prediction for the game with Fulham on 1st March but his post just missed the deadline. Some of you might also remember that he was not happy (in a good natured way) with my decision to disallow that entry. It is a great pleasure therefore to finally to congratulate Jedini on his first top.

Jedini’s was a proper top in that he was the outright winner of the round, scoring more hits than anyone else. This is only the eighteenth outright top of the season, all of the others have been shared with the bonus points going to the person who posted the earlier/earliest of the winning entries. If people would like to see a second version of the RJMC next season I propose to change the way bonus points are allocated for top place and the change I have in mind is different to the one I’ve mentioned previously. More on this when the season ends.

Of course we now know that the season will end shortly before 5:00pm, a week on Sunday. That’s a shame but I’ve been quite encouraged by what I’ve read on the site since last night. Most people seem to be saying the same things I would have liked to say. Atlei deserved their victory, our lads have outperformed expectations this season and there are grounds for optimism about our prospects for 2014/2015.

Last night’s loss means that there are just fifty-six more points to play for in the RJMC and that means that Bristol Blue, A Blue Essien, Richard Redmond & Scooba now cannot score enough points to catch the leader and so are out of the title race. In truth though it’s been a two horse for a quite a while and, just lately, probably more like a one horse race. Mathematically speaking, Aussieblue53 is still hanging in there but he has to score at least eight points more than Sleeping Dave next Sunday to take the race into the last round. Anything less than that and Dave will be crowned champion this weekend.

The closest race on the leaderboard is the one for 12th & 13th places where just three points separate The Psycho Pianist and RJMC Cup winner Gaurav_blue but, if you look, you’ll see that there are other tussles too.

Further confirmation that, between you, you had a good handle on Jose’s thoughts for this game is the fact that your average number of hits per entry in this round, 8.86, was above the average for the season so far, 8.81. That’s the sixteenth round in a row where that’s been the case. This is all the more impressive when you take the Azpilicueta googly into account. Jose didn’t quite fool all of you with it however.

RJMC_CL semi-finalist Akshayathreya correctly predicted that Ash & Dave would both start the game. He had them occupying the full-back positions with Ivanovic at centre-back and JT out of the line up so, since his entry was posted before Jose’s pre-game press conference it is possible that the reason Akshayathreya had both Ash & Dave in there is that he simply didn’t change his prediction after Jose confirmed that JT would play.

There were five unanimous hits this round; Ivanovic, Cahill, Azpilicueta, Ramires & Luiz. Unusually, the goalkeeper was not among them because two people stuck to Petr in their predictions. There were no unanimous misses although Oscar came close. Only two people, Blue_Fever & robbieg, did not include him in their line up. They were right, everyone else was wrong.
