Unfortunately , that's not what Conte is on record as saying .

He said they'd bough Bakayoko to understudy Matic and to eventually take over when Matic left  which , knowing this is why Chalobah wanted to leave.

What does on record mean?  It is hardly evidence backed by a oath in court.
I appreciate that Conte has to answer questions from the press that might not be easy to answer.
I have no problem with him muddying the waters a bit.  But I don't think every theory about what has been happening has to match his words precisely to be valid.

Besides, short of a sudden influx of 6 PL ready players in the next 17 days, I think it is fair to say that most of those that run the club are guilty of incompetence - Conte included.

I think the planned loan for Chalobah may have played a part in his decision to leave...

You always have to be the worst don't you;)

As for the incompetence claim, I'd be interested to know what Conte has done to deserve to be called incompetent. Because he hasn't been able to demand more from the club? With that I mean demanded certain players to stay until they were properly replaced?

I certainly agree that the club is failing miserably in terms of proper squad size and genuine options, but why would Conte be to blame for that? He, much like Mourinho, publicly demanded new players to strengthen the squad. Neither seem to have been obliged as far as I'm concerned. Massively let down from a position of strength. Bizarre...

Trying to take a positive view:)

The club has failed massively with their strategy, so far, but imo we are only three signings away from one of the best squads in the league. Three players we have been heavily linked to, and that all remain possibilities.

We are apparently negotiating over Oxlade-Chamberlain and Drinkwater at the moment, so they remain possible candidates for RWB and CM. And I believe that if we fail with these signings, we will buy someone else of similar quality. LWB remains the most important and difficult one, and Alex Sandro is yet to sign a new deal with Juventus. That leaves us very much still in the running for him, even if chances seem to be slim. We are clearly interested, Sandro is clearly interested in a massive pay-rise (that Juventus seem reluctant to give him), and Juventus' "he is going nowhere" stance has just as much credibility as they had over Pogba 12 months ago.

If we pull these three off, I'd say we both have one of the strongest first XIs and squads in the league.

First: Courtois - Azpi, Luiz, Cahill - Oxlade-Chamberlain, Kanté, Bakayoko, Alex Sandro - Pedro, Morata, Hazard

Second: Caballero - Rüdiger, Christensen, X - Moses, Fabregas, Drinkwater, Alonso - Willian, Batshuayi, Musonda/Boga (don't think we need more than 5 CBs when we have double cover in every position and a lot of versatile players)

Your absolutely right , Contes words on the matter carry less weight than your opinion. I stand corrected .

Far from the worst - plenty have said far worse than that.
I'd turn that around.  Why not Conte.  As a Mourinho lover who constantly moaned about his squad size I must have been asked 100 times if I didn't think that was JM's fault.  And always answered him and others, yes.

Excluding Conte from blame just because of a few comments now (when he has already had to start Boga) seems odd to me? Squad size should be planned from March.

Plenty have said we need more than 6 players (which is what I meant by the way)? I seem to be under the illusion the vast majority stating we need beween 3-5 players then.

You seem to think that Mourinho and Conte had/has any authority to make deals happen by themselves. Only way you can reach that conclusion really.

No - but I do think they have the authority to make it very clear from the coaching side of things that 19 over 21 players, including 3GKs, 2 striking crocks and Somebodji was a high guarantee of a failed season.  Likewise Conte this season (assuming <5 new adds).

It is the same as you know in all businesses.  You can claim the high ground if you resign very early on (not that I recommend it as a career move).  And indeed some managers have resigned in the first few days of September precisely because they thought the squad was too small to take responsibility for.  But you can't have it both ways, you are not excused as a manager just because you moaned a bit in August for a whole spring/Summer of bad planning.

If you were referring to the "6".  I'm just thinking of what a proper CL & PPL challenging club would want.  I think last season made us forget a) how desperate the previous one was, and b) how in fact it was turned around by simpling replacing 4 players with players of similar quality (and stopping screwing up the tactics).  We should be talking 23 or 24 O21s plus kids, not 19 to 21 players.

Quite remarkable that we have not signed anyone since Morata on July 20. The Champions League draw only strengthened the importance on getting more players in - for sure a lot will happen in the last week.

I think we are guaranteed to bring in a CM and a WB, those are the positions where we are ridiculously thin and need to sign someone "almost regardless of quality". Both Drinkwater and Oxlade-Chamberlain are more likely to happen than not at the moment. And when they do, I would say our squad is at an absolute minimum.

WB, AM and CF are the next areas to consider - here we are thin, but still at a "manageable" level. I think the club only wants to sign certain players for these positions (Alex Sandro, Rose, Llorente, Perisic, Vardy etc), and if we don't get them we will go with as is. The club don't want to spend just to fill up with numbers that don't have the quality to compete for a starting place. I guess this is where Antonio and the board disagree the most. Antonio wants players, the board don't want to make sub-optimal investments.

CBs: Cahill, Luiz, Azpilicueta, Christensen, Rüdiger

WBs: Alonso, Moses, Oxlade-Chamberlain

CMs: Kanté, Bakayoko, Fabregas, Drinkwater

AMs: Hazard, Pedro, Willian, Musonda

CFs: Morata, Batshuayi

If the worst case scenario is Ox and Drinkwater: That's 18 outfield players for 10 positions. Apart from Musonda, all those players have proven themselves to be capable of starting any game this season. That's 17 proper first team players compared to last season's 13/14. We have increased the quality of players 13-17 from last season, no doubt about that. And we have better competition for places, both at CB, WB, CM and CF.

However, it is still not enough and I guess every Chelsea fan hopes we will sign 1-3 more players for the positions mentioned. But if we don't, I firmly believe we have improved our squad from last season, and even though we don't have a squad that suggest we are favourites for PL or CL trophies, we have a strong foundation to further build on in future transfer windows.

I'm not sure I agree.

If, and it's a rather big if at the moment, we buy Drinkwater and Ox I don't think we are stronger than what we were at the same time last season. Remember we sold off Mikel, Ivan and Oscar midseason as well.

But sure. We would have a few more players compared to the core squad Conte used. But we also have a lot more weekday matches this season.

Fair enough. For me, our biggest weakness last season was the lack of competition for places. People moan about numbers and depth, but there is a big difference in having someone like Aké that "can" play LWB but that will never displace Alonso in any important game to having proper positional specialists that easily can and will. The players we have let go were "Akés in the squad" (other than Costa and Matic who both have been replaced by top players). Rüdiger, Morata, Bakayoko and for argument's sake Sandro, Chamberlain and Drinkwater give us so much more in terms of quality. Setting up a squad is not a numbers game - if you have a lot of versatile players like us - you could easily do with a squad of 20 capable outfield players.

I don't think anyone expects the perfect squad this year. Given the number of transfers needed that would always be a pipe dream in today's market. But I do think with said transfers we have a good squad, and a squad that can help us push for both PL and CL success this season. And if we do, we don't need many signings next summer to have one of the top 3-5 squads in Europe.
