FWIW - The table below shows the timings of our goals, not sure what it proves.

From my own perspective, I see us as being a fitter side than last season. Stoke were out on their feet after about 55mins on Saturday and apart from a 5 minute spell at about 75mins, we dominated them in the 2nd half. Pieters especially, was blowing out of his rear-end from about the 65th minute, I'd put his error for our winning goal down to his exhaustion. If Conte has done nothing else, he's made us into a 94 minute side (and he's done a fair bit else as well, in my view).

Scored-Conceded/15 min    Scored-Conc./10 min    Leading/Trailing    Goal types    Goals by half

Overall  0-15 16-30 31-45 46-60 61-75 76-90      1st half 2nd half
 Arsenal 6 - 5 7 - 5 9 - 4 9 - 8 9 - 6 16 - 6   22 - 14 34 - 20
 Bournemouth 6 - 7 6 - 11 9 - 5 5 - 9 5 - 11 11 - 11   21 - 23 21 - 31
 Burnley 6 - 5 4 - 3 4 - 9 3 - 7 6 - 9 8 - 9   14 - 17 17 - 25
 Chelsea 8 - 3 8 - 2 9 - 6 10 - 5 10 - 2 14 - 3   25 - 11 34 - 10

 Swansea City 4 - 5 0 - 9 8 - 8 5 - 11 8 - 14 11 - 16   12 - 22 24 - 41
 Tottenham 7 - 2 6 - 5 12 - 3 13 - 5 6 - 2 11 - 4   25 - 10 30 - 11
 Watford 8 - 3 1 - 8 5 - 13 7 - 10 6 - 4 6 - 10   14 - 24 19 - 24
 West Bromwich 8 - 4 4 - 6 8 - 5 6 - 5 8 - 5 5 - 13   20 - 15 19 - 23
 West Ham Utd 6 - 8 4 - 8 5 - 8 4 - 9 8 - 6 13 - 13   15 - 24 25 - 28

so only Liverpool have scored more in the first 30 minutes. to me, that doesn't suggest we start cautiously.

here we go..........

We have scored a LOT of very early goals in matches this season. And we have been behind how many times? 4?

http://www.soccerstats.com/timing.asp?league=England   (or see above)

Not a great deal.  No more than Watford or Westbrom and proportionately a lot less.
Basically we have just scored a lot of goals.  You can't analyse the performances without first recognising we are a good team with good players.

(since the concept of "when a goal is scored" is easy to grasp intuitively, this strikes me as a reliable stat.)

Nice twist of discussion point there.

Reference was made earlier to the Citeh v. Scousers game: they were creaming themselves on the radio after the game about what a great advert it was for the EPL, and how pleased would be the paymasters, etc. Just want to go on the record to state how much I hate this kind of 'product prioritisation': I don't know if it's because I'm a socialist or just an old fart, or both, but I hate this kind of language being used about football.

Very good for us as a player, but always been a manager who has adopted physical intimidation as a tactic. Largely because of the teams he's managed, which has embittered him down the years I suspect. He's always felt that he's not been given a chance to manage a top team, particularly ourselves and in that Blackburn game and today his team's approach reflected his sense of injustice. His post match interview today was a complete travesty of what took place in the game.

I remember Hughes as a player and to be honest he frustrated me, I always got the impression he was trying to score a wonder goal like with his trademark volley yet often he wasted the chance which could have otherwise resulted in a more bread and butter goal.

He scored some important goals in our cup runs including our first FA cup win since the 70's. He did take a fair bit of physical punishment and he also dished it out at times.

Yep, pretty much like Diego in fact.

No we don't.  We start cautiously and remain cautious until we go a goal down or we get to 65 mins and are still even.  By about 75 mins Fabregas comes on.

the fact that we outscored the opposition 16-5 within the first 30mins doesn't support your angle.

That games was a perfect example of why people across the globe like watching the EPL, whilst at the same time,we are struggling in Europe (collectively). End to end, bags of mistakes, poor refereeing...... A viewers' dream. Either one of those sides would have been dismantled by a team who was more clinical.

The Premier League is much like the X Factor - some talented people, odious judges (the FA), probably corrupt, and often hugely entertaining without producing top class performers.

Oh dear.

Firstly it is not my angle - I'm just pointing out the facts don't support the opposite angle.  Nor does observation.

Secondly you have one third of a point.  16 goals in the first half hour is impressive.  But so is 19 goals in the 2nd half hour and 24 goals in the last half hour.  Again - if you take away the fact that this is a very very good team, you can argue whatever your want.

I just heard some halfwit journalist on Talksport describe us as "clinical" (used as a dirty word, as a comparison against the glorious advert for football that was City vs Liverpool) and he then said he would "stop short of calling them cynical". Which obviously meant that he didn't stop short of that at all.

Compared to what critisism we've had to endure in the past, what we have now is one hell of an easy ride. Maybe that will change at some stage (it often does). But for now the overwhelming majority are quite complimentary of us.

You'll always find small snide remarks from some tool on the media. But we've experienced concerted efforts involving PL officials (past and present) as well as senior figures at the FA and UEFA. What we experience now is absolutely easy street.

If one find themselves to be rubbed the wrong way now, they really need to start bracing themselves.
