Admire your optimism but having looked at Spurs and the scousers fixtures, I think we are going to come up short unless we win both those games which will give us a fighting chance.

Sky bet have us 4/11 to finish outside the top 4 which speaks volumes.  I was hoping Spurs would beat Juve and have an all English quarter final to suck them dry of physical and mental energy which would have helped us no end.

Swap us with one of Spurs or Liverpool and we'd be quite worried about ending the season 5th, we'd be asking a lot more off our team to pull away from 5th place. Spurs and Liverpool have both peaked and they'll start to drop off, especially Spurs. Plus we can beat them both, and they know that, so they can't sit deep and look for a counter or they'll themselves a goal down with no way back.

The underdogs we are then, which is great because we've always done well in that position.

Just watched the highlights. Insane that we had six (6!) clear cut chances at 2-0.

  1. Giroud 1v1 where Tomkins saves on line (unlucky)
  2. Willian inside the six yard box, crazy chest block from Tomkins (unlucky)
  3. Hazard through on goal, tight angle, GK saves (should do better)
  4. Zappacosta free shot from six yards, blocked by Wan-Bissaka (should do better)
  5. Giroud header from six yards from Willian cross (should do better)
  6. Giroud double chance and hits the post from penalty spot area (should do better/unlucky)

Should have had this game buried early in the second half. On a normal day we win this game 4 or 5-0. Biggest problem at the moment is setting our chances. Not sure if it is incompetence or misfortune. Against United it was the same: Morata hits the bar, also scores injury time equalizer where he is wrongly called offside. Against Barcelona, Willian hits the post twice.

Point is, after the horrendous performances against Bournemouth and Watford, we have raised our game and are very unlucky with what we have gotten from them. City game aside, there are reasons to at least hope this team is starting to find the form we need to be able to secure top 4. Finishing our chances is key.

That's been the story of the season though - although some still wish to deny it. We're not remotely clinical or polished enough in the final third to capitalise on the solid number of chances we do generally create on a game by game basis. While we've been unlucky in some cases, most of the time it's been down to sheer wastefulness on our behalf. It in turn heaps more pressure on the defence to be mistake free.

Which is odd - because we are scoring well, conceding more than usual for Chelsea while playing an AM or 2 light and a CB extra, and keeping the ball at the back for long periods of time.
Perhaps your conclusions fit you view of the manager more closely that the facts.
