Why is a formation change necessary for attacking intent?

All we need is a striker on the pitch, Cesc in midfield and a CB who can actually give us some attacking impetus with his passing - ALL of which we have in the squad already.

Mind you, these are all features of Conte's 3-4-3 last season I am just not sure what went wrong and why it was changed.

Because teams easily found out how to play against us, 3-4-3 is not as effective anymore because the shock effect is gone. Because Alonso and Moses massively overperformed, and were effective contributors in attack, while this season they are playing like the half decent PL players they actually are. The formation change is needed to replace an ineffective wing back with another attacker. That’s why.

We need to win our remaining PL matches. Go like this for the rest of the season:

Courtois

Azpi

Christensen

Rudiger/Cahill/Luiz

Palmieri/Alonso

-

Fabregas/Barkley

Kanté

Bakayoko/Drinkwater

-

Willian/Pedro/Moses

Morata/Giroud

Hazard

Or maybe its less effective because the backline has lost Luiz, the midfield lost Matic and the CF we lost was Diego Costa?

Regardless, Luiz is still on our books, Kante and Fabregas are great players and Morata and Giroud are very decent CF options.

Changing a formation isn't as simple as hitting R2 on a Playstation controller.. It takes a hell of a lot of work on the training ground.

At present, the squad is built to play 3-4-3/3-5-2. Yes it can function in a 4-3-3 as well but that is going to take weeks of work on the training field to readjust.

There is no reason to switch just to be more attacking - just include more attacking personnel!

That's hardly an argument to not changing, is it?

Changing a formation is not very hard. It took us 45 minutes at Emirates to adapt to 3-4-3 a year ago. And that was a completely new formation for almost every player. 4-3-3 is something any footballer is used to. It is also the formation half of these players played in the first 10 or so games under Conte.

1. Like I said later on in the post, Luiz is still around but "sidelined", Fabregas and Kante are great options (I would rate much better than Matic and Kante) and Costa was a huge loss but, at the same time, Morata and Giroud aren't the worst players available.

2. In all likelihood, Conte had been working on that formation for quite a bit before the Arsenal mauling had eventually pushed him over the edge.

1. Have you watched Luiz this season? How many matches have Kanté + Fabregas in 3-4-3 been a success?

2. In all likelihood, Conte has spent (or should at least) time over the last few weeks trying out new stuff. Not sure if you have registered, but we have won 4 out of 15 matches in 2018.

The  West Brom game with Hazard playing off Giroud was a rare bright spot this year - that is surely the way to go.

Drinkwater is due at least a decent game and Christensen is due not making a game losing mistake for once.

Unfortunately, Zaha has been out for months and knowing our luck will be back to face us and desperate to prove  a point,  good thing they are currently beating Utd, let's hope that's sated them for their next big performance.

In the long term winning this game will not go to finishing top four we have to beat both spurs and liverpool at home but anything other than 3 points is unthinkable and Conte should go if not acheived.

Well they're beating Utd atm. Not expecting an easy game and a draw wouldn't be surprising.
