The idea that he was a last minute panic buy is an outright myth. Both Kepa and his agent confirmed Chelsea made contact several weeks before the transfer. The fact it hasn't worked out as we would have liked is a different matter.

This is exactly what I am talking about. Making contact only two-three weeks before to complete a £72m transfer is last minute. Do you actually think transfers happen on the day or in a couple of days before the happen?

Further to only making contact two to three weeks before we signed him there are also the inconvenient truths that he had a buyout of £18m six months prior and it was obvious TC was leaving for about another 18 months prior to that. How anyone can put him down as a well thought out/planned piece of business is simply not supported by the facts.

How contradictory. Of course transfers don't happen over a day or so.........yet you are trying to make out like we bought him purely in the 24 hours after Courtois went.

There is also a difference between contact being made and how long he was scouted. We have no idea how long he was scouted for.

You would hope that when paying £70m for a keeper they would have been scouted for at least 6 months. If he is worth £70m in the summer he must have been worth in excess of £18m in the previous January, yet we waited 7 months to the beginning of August to even register our interest with his agent.

Whether you rate him or not, whichever way you look at it, terrible signing. Worlds most expensive keeper benched for a veteran career 2nd choice keeper, by the man that picks the team. Anyone who thinks he has been performing well this season must think that Frank is making his selections on the basis of fickle CFCnet Forum members' opinions rather than his own opinion.

And he might well have been.......

and the previous January we didn't need him. He was heavily linked with Real at the time.

And how do you know when any interest was registered? You don't. None of us do.

An educated guess would be that it wasn't before he signed a new contract with an increased buy out clause, at which point he must have known Real was off because they were going to move for Courtois in the summer, at which point had we registered our interest Kepa's agent would have been on the blower to Marina so he could get his mitts on some of that £72m we wouldn't be paying.

He got a lot of leeway because last season he was playing much better. 14 PL clean sheets.

Never bought into that entire thing about a goal-keeper's clean sheet stat being a good reflection of his performance levels.

But yes I do agree that his levels have also dropped even further since last year.

Almost every Spanish youngster playing even slightly above mediocre is linked with Real Madrid - especially when they had well documented problems with Navas. So that's hardly a gauge of Kepa's ability.

Secondly, Courtois openly said that he was promised his move to Madrid the summer before he left... yet we closed the deal for Kepa in the late summer the year after... you're right we dont know... but I'll tell you what, the details dont support the point you're trying to make which is that Kepa was a well-scouted, good investment.
