Am I right in thinking that you moved to Italy? You've gone full Joe Dolce 😆

First paragraph is crucial here!

Good stuff Paul.....strange to read a balanced sensible Chelsea piece!......to allow you some modesty ..Jane..I know you are busy but I do look for your article suggestions....save Paul's blushes and maybe highlight his efforts for reference?

I'm writing this after the Spuds game. This is how I see the squad shaping up for the season ahead:

Mendy (#1)

Arrizabalaga (the great unknown)

Caballero (dependable backup)

Azpilicueta (captain and moral backbone of the club)

Thiago Silva (should be nailed on starter given his experience)

Chilwell (starting left back)

Reece James (should be aiming to take over from Azpilicueta at RB)

Rudiger (out the door? What a waste)

Christensen (he's either thought of as a waste of time or barely adequate by the fans)

Alonso (probably superfluous but I would still prefer him over Emerson)

Tomori (should be aiming to take over from Silva)

Zouma (probably the starter for this season)

Emerson (backup LB by default)

Havertz (should be starting most games platooning with Mount)

Pulisic (starts when fit)

Ziyech (starts unless CHO can pull his game around)

Mount (will captain the club one day but at present platooning with Havertz)

Kante (starts when fit)

Jorginho (very oppostion dependent role)

Gilmour (probably won't see him this season because of recovery from injury)

Loftus Cheek (could have had it all but...)

Kovacic (where has last year's player of the year gone?)

Barkley (really shouldn't be starting with the other options available)

Werner (needs to start every game)

Abraham (needs to work to start every game)

Giroud (great option to have available)

Hudson Odoi (was going to be a star before his injury, now the jury is out)

None of the available permutations gives us the physical presence of our squads of the mid 2000s that allowed us to steamroller sides. But back then we also had a second XI that we played in cups that was probably the second best side in the league. We need to develop a starting XI out of the above that other sides will be forced to react to, rather than the other way around, and hope that the rest of the players see it as a challenge to get into that side and not spit the collective dummy if they don't get to play regularly.
