Chelsea Reserve & Youth Team

^ It is Juni so it is certainly historically correct. He puts very little analysis in there. FA is brushed over - his remit was fulfilled - but surely some comment is necessary. The Academy is judged as a success based purely on the compliments it has got, but there is an admission that it has failed to make inroads on the first team. No real judgement on its success is made, and no success measures are actually identified, let alone assessed.

It is a bit like a report on the Peter Osgood statue. Undoubtedly a good thing, and admired. But let's not ask what it does.

Blundering around the internet as one does, I found this:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Juventus_F.C.#Out_on_loan

Juventus have 36 players out on loan.

They also have co-ownership of 9 players at other clubs.

Now checking some of the wikipedia links to players suggests that the database for Juventus players is not always up to date, and few of the players have actually moved on, but some 80% or so is right.

Does anyone know how youth systems in Italy work? Is it normal to have such a massive loan system? Or are Juve unique?

Very common - both for players out on loan and players that are co-owned.

Been doing it in Italy for years. At least for a good 10-15 years.

Juni

Parma had over 200 out last season. Basically they own a load of really, really small teams and effectively maintain those squads with contracts held by Parma and loaned out each year.

In terms of pure numbers a load of teams around the world outdo Chelsea but nobody has accumulated so many top-division players for developmental purposes.
