I think that's very unlikely! Just unfortunate enough to have Spurs supporters in the family and to have befriended scousers before they revealed their colours!

The older I've got the less schadenfreudey (or whatever the better word is) I've got about football and rival clubs losing, mostly because I know really good people who happen to support those clubs and who I've been able to be happy for when their teams do well. Still haven't lost it with Arsenal though, and don't think I ever will. Them losing will always elicit at least a smirk. Leicester were really poor in the Europe game. They came apart around this stage (if not time) last season, and in fairness to them they've been having to manage for a while now with key players either out or struggling for fitness. Don't watch enough of them to have a strong view on them but perhaps their efforts so far are catching up with them. Who wants to lead the bets on what Harry Maguire will be allowed to get away with today, and how soon after he'll score a vital goal?

I don't think (and know you don't either, just saying) Suarez and Costa belong in the same bracket no matter who you support. One used bog-standard centre forward wind up tricks you see up and down the league but just did them extremely effective, the other is a cheating racist b*stard. Fernandes is irritating as an opposition player, but I don't think a villain type. He dives, sure. But loads do. What I like about him though is that he demands a high level from his team mates and delivers the high level himself. And he's a crap loser. In that sense he's more, to me, like peak Fabregas on steroids. We could do with a few who had an attitude like his, imo.

I'd say unsporting conduct (if that's the correct wording) but yes, beyond the needling I think every CB has to accept and keep their cool with and into straight up cheating.
  5. Atletico Madrid 0 Chelsea 1

Couldn't help but wonder why Atletico, who seem to me to be very talented, chose to sit back and cheat. They seem capable of much more than that. We played well so I accept part of it is that we forced the issue, but their whole approach seemed a huge own goal to me. A second goal would have been nice. Rudiger breaking every bone in Suarez's face would have been better. He literally cannot go 15 seconds without cheating. Mount, Jorginho, Christensen and Rudiger, all absolutely fantastic. The first two will be a huge miss for the second leg.

Good: Mount and Alonso standing up and taking no sh*t, Werner working his socks off, Christensen and Rudiger looking comfortable. Not good: Hudson-Odoi's not managed a decent cross, Kovacic is taking too many touches and wasting those momentary transitional opportunities before the back 6 regroups, watching Luis Suarez makes me angry. It's okay so far in that we're matching a good side. They are in control, though. We may have the ball but they are dictating what happens and where.

Simeone pointing to our 3 keepers as evidence of how good the squad is ... Also just read that Suarez hasn't scored in the CL this season. Wish I hadn't.

I am starting to feel for Chilwell. Unlike the others to have had lost places since Tuchel came in, I don't think he really deserves it on a personal level even if it has been a pragmatic necessity.

I recall us being linked in the summer, and vaguely recall Torres has said bids were made and rejected at that time despite him asking they be listened to. Again, means little in terms of what actually happened.

That story does ring a bell, guess I read it at the time also. Think DWMH has beat me to it, but clearly we should take the quote with a huge pinch of salt given what Gil said he wouldn't do and what we know very well he did just a few months later. 2009 ... Bloody hell, I feel old.
  11. Transfer Talk Topic

Just checked; the 2-2 was in Madrid. We beat them 4-0 at our place, I'd invented them scoring. Bizarrely I remember the game I watched in the pub (by Fulham Broadway tube, was an Aussie-themed one at the time, no idea what it's called now!) better than the one I was in the ground and sober for!

I don't think press reports mean anything at all so perhaps we never were interested in Aguero, but certainly we were very heavily linked in the mainstream press. Vaguely recall us beating Atletico 3 or 4-1 at home in the CL group @Mark Kelly is referring to and chatting to someone in the ground about it then. My recollection does differ to @Martin1905, though. I have in my head we were out of the race by the time we signed Torres because Aguero was too expensive, even more so than Torres was. Might have invented that over time but it's the press narrative I recall and does make some sense, even if counterintuitive. As you say, Atletico had paid a huge sum for him as a teen and he would have wanted a very long, well paid contract. Tevez is the Argentine I really wanted in that earlier 2010s period. I think I just wanted a fierce, pressing, scoring b*st*rd. Costa sorted that fix for me for a while but I could go for a player like that again!

... ... Does anyone ever wish that we'd get to play ourselves? Could do with the boost.
  14. Season expectations/predictions/peculiarities 2020/21

Certainly Liverpool's current form is, imo, worse than our worst spell of form this season. Just their best spells have been much, much better than our best. If they continue to be this bad (I personally think unlikely, but who knows) then playing as if draws are okay may well work. Edited for me realising we'll play Liverpool when they can't win a league game to save their lives and then remembering Wolves and Arsenal ... ffs.
  15. Season expectations/predictions/peculiarities 2020/21

A little, yes. I doubt any player has in their mind or has been told "don't worry about it". But I think you'd struggle to argue that we play like a team going all out for the results we need to get top 4, who will risk losing as part of trying to win. And I do think it's quite possible the board have set moderate mid-season expectations that don't have CL qualification as an absolute must; I think the likes of Hiddink pt2 and Di Matteo show precedent for that. Perhaps the hope is that we can stutter over the line at a consistent 40mph while those who started at 80mph career off the road before the race finishes. (Edit: I don't drive if those speeds show it!)
  16. Southampton 1 Chelsea 1

No. That is my exact point. I expect them* to be up and down. I expect them to be poor one week and great the next, irrespective of who they play. I think they will continue being that way until game 38. I think we tend to beat, or at least not lose to, the lesser sides and get nothing out of anyone decent. I think it's going to take much more work than can be realistically done in this season to change that. I expect both sets of form, Everton's/United's/Liverpool's and ours, to be more or less the same up until the final day of the season. My reading of comments here, yours included, is that some other people expect both sets to change; ours to be better and our competitors to go from "erratic" to consistently losing. That seems very unlikely to me. How often do sets of form entrenched for 25ish games suddenly change? I don't look at us and see a side playing as if they think taking risks to win is necessary. Again, if you see differently, that's fine. But say so. *Not Leeds, who I just included because I think Elland Road will be a hard place to go after those games and before the 2nd Atletico tie. They are obviously a different beast to Liverpool, United and Everton.
  17. Southampton 1 Chelsea 1

You're the one attaching pessimism to my words, not me. I just don't expect a drastic change in our form. Again, if you think we are going to get drastically different results against better sides in upcoming games than we have so far this season, please say so. (Edit: Leeds of course not a better side, but I expect a tricky away fixture after that run!)
  18. Southampton 1 Chelsea 1

I mean what I say; I'm confident we won't make the top 4 and that doing so has been difficult to the point of impossible for a while. It really, really doesn't matter too much where we are in the table in February. West Ham are 5th, ffs. What matters is what we can be realistically expected to do over the course of 38 games. It has been many months since 70 or so points looked doable. The chances of us drastically improving our form and our competitors all going from "up and down" to just "down" are very slim. On your first paragraph ... Well, yes. That doesn't seem to be the route we're taking. I'll be willing to listen if you want to say you think lining up with 7 defensive players against a side who have lost 6 on the trot suggests that results are what we're primarily going for.
  19. Southampton 1 Chelsea 1

Kovacic looked worse without Jorginho and somehow that isn't Kovacic's fault, it's Kante's.
  20. Southampton 1 Chelsea 1

I think the organising is all he's been asked or is expected to do. The coaching these players clearly need to attack intelligently is going to take time. I don't think an unbeaten streak against Burnley or Newcastle is much to write home about, but I also won't be too put out when we get very little out of United, Liverpool, Everton and Leeds over the next few weeks. This season has been done for a while imo, and the name of the game is now preparing for next season.
  21. Season expectations/predictions/peculiarities 2020/21

Watching the Southampton game and the thought occurred ... We aren't trying to make top 4. We don't think it is doable. The objective this season is practice Tuchel football without taking on too much damage. Very hard to explain basically 7 defenders against a team who've lost 6 on the trot otherwise.
  22. Southampton 1 Chelsea 1

Top 4 has been an unlikely long shot (imo pretty much impossible) since December. This result doesn't really make any difference to that. I don't know why teams who have been up and down all season being in an entirely predictable, likely short-lived "down" patch excited us that much. There are things I'm seeing from us under Tuchel I like and suggest real differences on the training ground, but I don't think we'll see any real benefits in performances or results for a while. We are setting up as if damage limitation, not top 4, is the aim. Perhaps it is.
  23. Transfer Talk Topic

Don't know that I can be bothered to watch us sign him for £100m only for him to somehow score only 3 goals next season.
  24. Season expectations/predictions/peculiarities 2020/21

I'm not ready to shift yet; the ship is steadied, but so far what we've seen is victories against the sorts of teams we had been beating even when in less convincing form. I do think we were on a downward trajectory and wouldn't have managed even that without the change in coaches, but we're still in a situation where we're competing at least 4 other clubs for 4th (or 6 or 7 clubs for one of the top 4 spots). We need to better our overall first half of the season form rather than match it. The end of February and March will be key. If we pick up results in those games and are still 4th or nearby going into April, then I will gladly say I was wrong. For what it's worth, I never thought United looked contenders. They put together runs from time to time and look good in those periods, but it never lasts. That's what they do under Solksjaer.
  25. Chelsea 2 Newcastle United 0

I guess we're going to be pretty boring for the rest of the season at least, but can live with that. Nice to be 4th but it really doesn't mean much beyond feeling nice just yet. If we get through the games against the teams around us while staying 4th, then we can say things are looking up.
